Today, March 3rd 2015, the pupils of Primary 6 and Primary 7 visited Scotland Street Museum to experience life as a WWII pupil – and what an experience it was!!  Dressed appropriately the children sat in rows, in silence, with feet flat on the floor and arms folded.  Miss James, the WWII teacher, took the children through their ‘paces’.  There were a lot of worried faces as work began but the children soon got to grips with slates and slate pencils for their mental arithmetic.  Pens, ink and blotting paper were used for the spelling exercise.  These were not easy to use and many children have ‘inky’ hands to prove it but fortunately the ‘belt’ stayed safely on the teacher’s desk!  They completed labels to be worn in case of evacuation and learned exactly what they had to do with their gas masks.  Eventually when the bell rang they were transported back to 2015 with a sigh of relief!!  All that was left was a spot of ‘drill’ with the janitor, Mr James!

The children all thoroughly enjoyed the session but didn’t want their class teacher to take lessons from Miss James!!  Perhaps life in an Overtown Primary classroom is not too bad after all!!
