Outdoor Science Area at Step by Step Nursery. The children use tyres to get the guttering at the right height to enable them to join together and then use recycled rain water from the water butt to create water ways. Great for problem solving and developing numeracy!

Tepees and Igloos
Innovative members of the NLC CFE Outdoor Learning group will soon be able to share some of their practice with colleagues across NLC. Nursery staff will share info about their tepees and tree trunks and can advise staff on using boulders and creating an igloo!
Look out for workshops being offered across NLC soon.
The Brilliance of a Boulder!
We have invested in several of our nurseries this year. We are supporting the development of “Naturalistic Spaces`. Richard Stewart was one of the nurseries who were allocated a boulder. Think of the fun children have when climbing over rocks and boulders at the seaside, well now that enjoyment can happen within nursery play areas. Children develop co-ordination, balance and agility while playing on boulders and these can be combined with other open ended resources to extend learning.
Richard Stewart Nursery is a member of the CFEOL Group and will soon be offering workshops to colleagues across the NLC area.

Members of the CFEOL group will soon be sharing their expertise with colleagues across the NLC area.
Look out for info on workshops being held in local areas.

Outdoor Topic Boxes
Staff at Victoria Primary school were the latest staff group to participate in the Outdoor Topic Box training. The group were dubious about going out in the rain but, after being given encouragement from Jacquie and Marian , participated fully and enthusiastically! They proved that they could create –
A waterfall
A school for fairies
A toilet for Shrek
and all of this easily reflecting CFE active learning!
