Holytown PS & Nurersy Class

Outdoor Learning

Outdoor Learning is at the heart of the education we provide in Holytown Primary School and Nursery Class.  We believe all children should have the opportunity to learn outdoors.  We offer a range of activities including, Forest Schools, Outdoor PE, Our School Garden as well as Educational Visits.

Nursery staff are developing their Forest Schools skills, they have been working with pupils, staff and parents of Nursery children to allow our children to gain some of the many skills this experience brings.

All primary classes have designated areas of our community or sensory garden to look after to increase their sense of responsibility for the environment.

These areas alongside the playground are used to teach a variety of curricular areas such as maths and PE. We also use natural materials with the pupils to encourage problem solving and team work. We have trim trains and access to a nearby play park that are used a great deal by the pupils.

Our P7 pupils visit Kilbowie Residential Centre every session for a school week and they experience many new activities and challenges which build their confidence and  teamwork. Pupils experience activities such as rock climbing, hill walking, abseiling, gorge walking, sailing, canoeing and skiing. Pupils also learn to become more responsible and independent as they are expected to make their own beds and keep their dorms tidy. They have to tidy up after each meal and each activity and lights are out by 10pm each night.

Every year, all classes will go on at least one educational visit.  These are linked to ongoing class work and are used to enhance learning across the curriculum.
