The World of Work Week!

This week has been the World of Work Week in Chryston Primary. As part of Primary 1’s committee they had been learning about People who Help Us. This week we have been so lucky because we met a Police Man, the Fire Brigade and a Midwife. We know they all help us in different ways and are part of the emergency services!

On Friday we got to visit out lunch hall. BUT there was lots of people there to tell us about all their different jobs. There was opticians, the ice cream shop, a paramedic, recycling centre, photographer, lawyer and an author!

Some of our favourite parts were….

Meeting the ice cream lady – Erin & Scott

I enjoyed all of it – Harrison

I liked the opticians because of the glasses – Josh, Sarah & Sienna

I liked meeting the lawyer – Zane

I liked meeting the lady who paints – Carys

I liked meeting the policeman – Zak

I liked seeing the Aston Martin – Logan

Super at Subtraction!

This week we have been learning all about Subtraction. We know some different words for subtraction they are take away, minus, less and subtract.

We have done 5 stations to practise taking away.

  1. We used the buses to jump back on the 20 number lines by rolling a dice.
  2. We had a dragon that was taking away our gold, we had to find out how many were missing by using our fingers.
  3. We had one with a wizard who made us close our eyes so we wouldn’t see how many gems he took away. We had to find out how many were missing.
  4. We had a jumble sale station were someone took some of the things away and the rest found out how many were missing.
  5. We used Dinosaur land and someone took away some of the dinosaurs. Everyone else had to find out how many dinosaurs were gone!

We always have to remember to use our fingers!!

The Highland Games

Yesterday we took part in the Highland Games in the gym hall. There were 3 adults; Mrs Hansen, Miss Kinloch and Miss Nisbet. Only the Primary 1’s were taking part.

We split into 4 groups which we called Clans. There was Douglas, Anderson, Campbell and Bruce. We had a shield to show which clan we were in.

We took part in 4 activities. They were the Farmers Dash, the Welly Toss, the Caber toss and the Shot Put. We used our shields to mark how far we could throw. Every Clan won an activity!

After our Highland Games we were very lucky! We came back into class and we got a little of irn bru and a bit of shortbread. We had them because they are food and drink from our country Scotland.

We had a great time at our Highland Games!!

What we’ve learned this week!

Literacy

Over the past two days we’ve all got new reading books. We have really enjoyed reading our books. We follow the words along the line and sound out the words. We’re very good at using our robot arms to sound out and blend.

Maths

We have been adding numbers. We know the numbers get bigger when we add them together. We used number lines today. Some people needed a number line to 10 for their sums and some children did some really tricky sums all the way up to 20!

Today when telling the time on our analogue clocks we had the big hand at the 6! That means it is half past! We know that the little hand tells us the hour. Miss Kinloch says we are superstars at telling the time!

Our fantastic learning in Numeracy

We are sorry we have not posted in a while but since we have come back after the Winter break we have been so busy with our Numeracy!

Big Maths

In Big Maths we have been learning about learning about doubling our numbers. We can double 1, 2, 3 ,4 and 5. We have been learning to read 1 digit numbers. We played a game of hot potato and if you get caught with the hot potato you need to read the 1 digit number. (or 2 digit if you’re a clever cookie!)

Addition

We have been really impressing Miss Kinloch with our addition skills. Today we were doing the story of 3. We worked with a partner to find the 4 sums in the story of 3 and we know they all need to equal 3. We wrote the sums beautifully in our jotters. We know when we write sums in our jotter every number gets its own box. (box has our sound of the week in it – Josh)

Bookbug

Primary 1a, 1b and 1/2 have been learning about 3 books. Gorilla Loves Vanilla, Little Owls Egg and the 4th Bonniest Baby in Dundee.

Today we voted for the best book. I t was a hard decision because you could only pick one. We used a piece of paper to make our vote. We had to post it in our special Christmas Post box.

We have enjoyed…

Reading the books, getting to take the books home, dressing our teddies up, putting the animals in order in the queue, making ice creams in the role play corner, and pretending to be on the bus from the 4th bonniest baby.

Our winner is…

GORILLA LOVES VANILLA!

Zoo Lab

Today we also got another treat which was Zoo Lab.

We got to see some very cool animals.

We saw…

Raymond and Terry the Rats

Benjamin the Frog

Marvin the Turtle

Arthur the Cockroach

We did not get to hold them but we did get to look closely at them and learn some knew facts about them.

We had a great visit with Zoo Lab!

Children in Need

Today is a dress down day because it is Pudsy Bear Day or Children in Need.

We wore pudsy ears, pudsy bows and pudsy clothes.

We brought in £1 so we could wear our own clothes. The money is going to a charity that helps children.

We did some fun activities in the gym hall. We got to decorate cakes, colour in and go to the photobooth.

We had a great day for Children in Need!

Welcoming a baby

P1b had an exciting visit from Mr Malcolm as a nice end to our RME topic.  We have learned how people of lots of different faiths welcome a baby.  Today we acted out ‘baby’ Corrin’s Baptism to learn what happens when a Christian family welcomes a baby.
