Symmetry

We have been learning all about symmetry. We know this means that something is the same on both sides. This would also mean they are the same height. There is a line of symmetry in the middle and it splits the picture into two halves. We can tell when something is or is not symmetrical we did lots of stations to show this.

At the Smart board we played a game where we matched pictures to make them symmetrical. To make it a little trickier we also looked at shapes and patterns that were symmetrical too.

At the creative station we made a symmetrical shape with paper and when we opened it up we saw the line of symmetry. To decorate the shape we had to do symmetrical pictures. They looked really great!img_3833img_3840At this station we used the counters to make symmetrical patterns. When we put a counter on one side we then had to do it on the other side. Some of us made very fancy patterns. img_3834 img_3837Working together as a team we had to match the ladybirds and butterflies with the correct patterns together. It was tricky because there was lots of pictures so we really needed to use our eyes.

In this station we had to use the peg boards to make symmetrical patterns. To make this a little easier we had a line of symmetry on the board. img_3835img_3841

Today we got a bit messy and created our own symmetrical paintings. We had to paint only one side! The paper had a line of symmetry and when we folded over the paper and gave it a magic rub the painting became symmetrical and wonderful!image image image

Christmas Jumper Day!

Today is Christmas Jumper Day! Don’t we look great?!

img_3874

We had a parade in the hall to see all the jumpers! We got to dance on the stage too! img_3875
Check us out playing a Christmas edition of Naughty Kitten Common Words! It was so funny!img_3882 Later in the day we got to make our own Christmas jumpers but they were extra special because they were symmetrical! We designed one half and a partner finished it by making it symmetrical. We did a great job!img_3885 img_3886 img_3887 img_3888 img_3889

We love Christmas Jumper Day!

Christmas Learning Stations

We have been doing Christmas stations on class because it’s nearly Christmas! We are all very excited and happy about Christmas!
img_3843

At this station we were to build Santa’s sleigh. We used the big lego bricks and worked together with our friends to make a super sleigh. We were even able to go on our sleigh. It was great fun!
img_3844

At this station we had to pick out a Christmas bauble. The baubles had our common words on them. If we could read the word we got to write it on our Christmas Tree.

The other part of our literacy station is you need to match the capital letter Gingerbread Houses with the lowercase Gingerbread men!
img_3845

In the Library we have been busy reading Christmas Stories to our friend Elf. Elf is an important friend because he works for Santa and is telling Santa who is great at reading him stories!img_3846We have been so busy helping Santa in his workshop. We can wrap the presents, write naughty and nice lists, and we can design our own toys. We have also been pretending to be Santa, Rudolph and the Elves!
img_3847At this station we have been sorting out odd and even numbers that are on baubles,  we give them to either Odd Tod or Even Steven. On our ten frames we need to count out the number with the cubes.
img_3848

With the Snowmen you have to give them a number hat and then count out the buttons to match the hat. Then you get to play again.

Super Senses

This week we have been learning all about our sense of smell and taste!

We know that on our tongue we have tastebuds.

We know that it can taste 5 things savoury, salty, sweet, bitter and sour!

On Wednesday we did a taste test with a difference because we had to wear blindfolds! We were trying to guess how it tasted with only our taste buds!

Take a look at our faces!

What we thought…..

The chocolate was yummy and sweet – James

The cheese was yummy and savoury – Jay

The lime was yucky and sour – Rory

On Thursday we did an experiment! We had to use our senses to work out the flavours of crisps that had lost their packaging. We used our senses of smell and taste to solve the problem! There were 3 different types to sort.

img_3727 img_3728 img_3729 img_3734

Here are the results…

1 2 3

What we learned from the experiment….

The ready salted was hard because it didn’t have a strong smell – Ruth

The prawn cocktail was easy because it had a very strong smell – Zak & Callan

Salt & Vinegar was easy when we tasted it but not when we smelled it – Alfie & Gracie

We learned on Friday that when you hold your nose you can’t smell or taste! Crazy!!

3D Shape

This week we have been learning all about 3D shape! Some of the 3D shapes that we know are…..

Cylinder – Matthew

Triangular Prism – Roxana

Cube – Jack

Cone – Zara

Sphere – Donald

Pyramid – Ruth

Cuboid – Callan

On Thursday and Friday we explored our new 3D shapes. We had 5 stations.

  1. We made a toy using 3D shapes for our 3D shape catalogue (we even took a picture)
  2. We sorted out the 3D shapes that roll or don’t roll
  3. We sorted the 3D on to the correct name and photograph
  4. We made 3D shapes with the playdough
  5. We printed with 3D shapes to make 2D shapes

Something new I learned about 3D shapes…

I learned about a sphere – Jay

I learned that tins are cylinders – Eilidh

I learned about cuboids – Zak

I learned about cubes – Ruth

I learned that a cube is made of squares – Rory

Our Senses

Yesterday afternoon we were learning more about our Senses. We found out that the brain receives messages from parts of the body (eyes, hands, tongue, nose and ears) and makes senses of the messages. Nerves carry the messages around our body.

We had stations for each of Senses and we knew which sense to use by looking at the body part picture. img_3646 img_3647 img_3648 img_3649 img_3650

I liked looking at the sand with a magnifying glass – Zak

I liked hearing the music, the instrument sent a message to my brain – Rory

I liked the food tasting because my brain got a message from my tongue – Ruth & Zara

I liked the feeling station because some things were nice and soft – Jay

I liked the smelling station and the coffee smell was my favourite – Holly

Today Miss Kinloch and Mrs Mutch tried to trick our brains!!

Mrs Mutch showed us a tray with lots of things on it. We had to look at it for 10 seconds and then she covered it. She asked us to remember what was there. This was easy! But then she made it trickier she had taken some things away! We had to try and work out what was missing. It was fun!

Miss Kinloch had three cups, one hot, one cold and one room temperature. She asked for a volunteer and they had to hold the hot and the cold in different hands. They had to do this for 1 minute. Miss Kinloch checked to see if one hand was hot and the other was cold. Then they had to hold the room temperature cup, the hand that had been hot got cold and the hand that had been cold got hot! It was crazy! Our brain was confused because our nerves were sending mixed messages!

We really like our senses topic and we can’t wait to learn some more!

Shapes

This week we have been learning all about shapes. Some of the shapes that we know are…

Square – Matthew

Circle – Kacey

Triangle – Lewis M

Oval – Holly

Diamond – Zak

Octagon – Callan

Pentagon – Ruth

Hexagon – Roxana

Triangle – Ava

Rectangle – Brodie

On Wednesday we went on a Shape Hunt around the school we were able to find lots of the shapes that we know and we took pictures on the i-pads to show this. We even found Primary 1a making a shape! They were sitting in a circle. The shape hunt was fun!

Golden Time fun

Today we had our first ever golden time and it was fantastically awesome!

We got to go to a station that we had picked on Monday. We had to be good all week so that we didn’t get a warning card and lose time off our Golden Time.

We had been so excited all day and we finally got Golden Time this afternoon!

We got to pick from Construction, Sand, Library, Painting and i-pads. We all had so much fun at our choices. Look at us having a great time during Golden Time…

img_3572 img_3573 img_3574 img_3575 img_3576

We can’t wait to choose our next stations on Monday! Golden Time is the best ever!!!
