Participating in Pattern

We have loved taking part in Maths Week. It’s name was Participating in Pattern. We learned about colour, shape and picture patterns.

We noticed patterns in rhyming words. We did lots of activities about rhyming words during literacy this week too. We even wrote a rhyming story about a Fat Cat on a mat.

On Thursday we had an art afternoon all about Pattern. We printed, and cut and stick to make 3 beautiful different patterns. You can see them in our class and around the school.

Some of our favourite parts of Maths Week were…

  • I’ve loved doing patterns – Sarah
  • Putting my Pattern on Twitter – Josh
  • Making my own pattern – Mylee
  • Doing my rhyming work – Nathan
  • Using the bears to make a pattern – Madison
  • Making a patterns with the pompoms – Sam & Harrison
  • Doing a dinosaur pattern – Olivia & Junior
  • Colouring in patterns – Sienna
  • Playing rhyming bingo – Ava

Lots of Learning!

Sorting

This week we have been sorting by colours

We sang lots of songs about colours our favourite was the crayon song where we had to guess the colour from a rhyme. Orange doesn’t rhyme with anything!

We did some stations for colour sorting we had to…

  • we had to use tweezers to put the coloured pom poms in the correct bowl
  • we sorted the dinosaurs by colour and we had to count them
  • we played snap on the Smart board with colours
  • we played colour games
  • we matched colour words to the correct colour

New Sound

We learned our first ever sound it says ‘a’ and its name is ‘A’.

Things we know about ‘a’ are…

  • it sits on the line and reaches the grass
  • it is a curly caterpillar letter and has a fat tummy!
  • apple, ant, anchor, and aeroplane all start with our sound.

We have been…

  • practising writing a and A
  • sorting out capital and lower case letters
  • looking for things that start with a and A.

Thank you for reading about our learning!

Our exciting learning!

Literacy

This week we have been learning more about our names. We have been looking at the capital letters at the start of our names. We put them in our name book. We really enjoyed making our big name book.

On Friday we made something special for our names we made a Name Rocket.

We had to put our name in right order and we made our rockets by ourselves.

Numeracy

Our number this week has been Two!

We have been making it with playdoh, chalk and with pens at the writing area.

We read a story on Friday called One, Two Cockatoo. It was a very good and funny story and we managed to count all the way up to 64.

Maths

This week we started something new in Maths. We have been doing Sorting.

We had to sort by Holes and No Holes, Big & Small, Float or Sink, Rough or Smooth, out pair of socks.

Our favourites were…

Rough & Soft – Zane, Nathan

Sink & Float – Olivia, Josh, Zak, Eilidh, Sam, Junior, Scott, Mylee, Lewis, Sienna, Logan

Holes & No Holes –

Socks – Sarah, Madison, Erin, Ava

Big & Small – Carys

Thank you for reading about our learning!

This Week’s Learning in P1b!

This week we have been learning all about our names! We have a special Name folder with a Name Jigsaw and a writing card. We are becoming very good at writing our names and we’re super at our jigsaw.

We learned our first ever number Zero! Our friend Zero Zero Superhero has been helping us. It looks like a circle. We made zero everywhere!

We learned one! It looks like a straight line. We used the smart-board, chalk, play-dough, beads and sand. We are very good at making and writing one!

We’ve had a super Week!!!!

Health Week Day 3 & Sports Day

Wednesday was Sports Day! We had great fun competing in the 3 different races. We took part in the flat race, hurdles race and bean bag race. We are happy that the rain stayed away!

Thank you to all our families who were able to come and cheer us on!

In the afternoon we had some time to think about how we are all special and unique! We draw beautiful self portraits using a mirror. They looked so good when they were finished!

Sharing

This week in Maths & Numeracy we have been learning about Sharing.

We know that when we share it must even, the same, equal and fair.

We practised sharing into equal groups earlier in the week at our stations.

We have learned a special new symbol it looks like dot, line and a dot. It is called the Division Symbol but we know it means sharing!

We know that in the sum the first number is the ‘sweeties’ or amount that needs shared.

The second number is the number of ‘plates’ or groups or people they have to be shared between.

The answer is how many one person or group or plate will get.

Check us out doing our very TRICKY new sums!!

Health Week Day One!

Today is the first day of Health Week. Today we got to go out on our bikes or scooters. We had to remember to wear our helmets so that we don’t hurt ourselves especially our heads.

Unfortunately it wasn’t a lovely, sunny day but the weather did not stop us! We had a great time out in the playground.

The boys and girls who didn’t have bikes or scooters did not miss out on the fun as they got to play fun games in the Gym Hall!

Here we are having a great time on our bikes and scooters!

Capacity

We have been learning all about Capacity in class this week.

We know capacity is how much a containers can hold.

We have learned some useful new words to help us when measuring capacity. They are half full, full, empty, half empty, nearly full, and nearly empty.

We have learned the very important skill of estimating which means we make a serious guess and then check by counting.

We explored capacity further in some stations they were;

1.The water station. We were filling up little pots with little cups. We had to count how many cups filled the pot. We sometimes estimated correctly!

2. The jug station. We had to make some jugs half full, full, empty, half empty, nearly full, and nearly empty.

3. The Smart-board station. We played a game where we had to find the container that held the most in it. We were super at it!

4. The sand station. We had different sized bottles and we had to fill them with sand using little cups. We had to make an estimate and then count how many cups of sand it would take.

5. The cube station. We were trying to find out which container could hold the most cubes. The containers were all different sizes and some were even round.

Some new things we have learned or we have enjoyed are…

Eilidh & Blake – I liked the water station because you had to guess how many cups would fill the bowl.

Lewis W – I liked the sand station because I liked filling the bottles up.

Kacey – I liked the Jug station because it was tricky.

James & Brodie – I liked all the stations because they were all great.

Ava – I liked the SMART board station because I like getting the answer right.

Learning about Length!

This week we have started a new topic in Maths about Measurement.

We know there are 4 areas of measurement we will learn about capacity, weight, time and length.

This week we have been focusing on length.

We know some new words for length. Some of them are bigger, fat, long, wide, narrow, thin, biggest, smallest, longest, large, big, tall, huge, tiny and short. We have been using these new words all week!

We have been using non-standard units of measure and have tried things like paper clips, play-dough, bricks, and cubes.

We know 4 really important rules for using non-standard units of measurement for length. They are…

1.Don’t leave gaps!

2. They all need to be the same size!

3. They have to go in a straight line. NO ZIG ZAGS!!

4. You need to measure the whole thing!

Some of the stations we have enjoyed doing for length are…

Roxana & Jay – measuring with paper clips

Ava & Ruth – measuring the class chairs

Matthew – using the play-dough to make things long and short

Lewis W – measuring the animals

Lewis M  & Holly- measuring with the building blocks

Check us out exploring our length stations…
