Condorrat Primary School

Dream, Believe, Achieve

Health & Wellbeing – Sports

Here at Condorrat Primary we pride ourselves on being the fittest, most active school in Scotland, celebrating sporting success at every opportunity possible!

We have a designated PE teacher who delivers a wide range of sports including: basketball, touch rugby, dance, netball, hockey, football, badminton and gymnastics (to name but a few). We are also the only primary school in Scotland who offers a High Interval Training programme called ‘GameFit’, which encourages our learners to maintain a good level of fitness and to embed fitness into their daily routine.

Our school put our pupils’ voices at the forefront of our learning, in particular when considering making changes or introducing new ideas. We use our ‘Thinking Circles’ assembly time to gather pupils’ ideas, suggestions and opinions about a variety of issues including how we can make PE the best experience possible for all pupils.

Recently, we created a wonderful working partnership with our colleagues at North Lanarkshire’s Restorative Justice Programme where a purpose built bike shed was erected in order for bikes to be stored safely and securely. Our friends at Restorative Justice upcycled broken and damaged bikes and donated them to our school, which has enabled us to offer a programme called ‘Learn2Cycle’. ‘Learn2Cycle is a cycling training programme delivered during the school day to teach our pupils how to ride a bike in a safe way. Our vision is that all of our pupils will be able ride a bike by the end of the school year. Restorative Justice have also donated bikes to some of our families who required a little help with obtaining a forever bike for their child. We would like to thank our partnership for their support.

As we are a SportScotland Gold Award school, we have extended our PE curriculum where all of our learners will receive their second hour of PE outdoors (weather permitting). We have heavily invested in high quality PE equipment suitable for the outdoors. Our friends from Restorative Justice further  offered their services by building us a suitable place to store our equipment. We are extremely grateful for their contributions and efforts in supporting our promise to provide our pupils with quality PE education.

We recognise every pupils’ sporting achievement (no matter how small) by showcasing our ‘Sports Star of the Session’ and our ‘Sports Hero of the Week’ names and faces on our display board, along with certificates and our special trophy. We also encourage our pupils to share their sporting achievements and participation in sport out with school by asking them to bring in a medal, photo, certificate etc to help them to talk about what they did. Another fabulous way to keep sport and exercise at the forefront of our school ethos.

Our pupils are regularly invited to competitive and non-competitive sporting events such as: cross-country running, rugby events, football games and more! Our recent success was where one of our pupils placed FIRST in Greenfauld’s High School cross-country transition event! WELL DONE!

We have been promoting girls’ football by providing a lunchtime football club to our girls in P5-7. We have 22 players who have taken part in hail, rain and windy conditions, without any fuss – well done girls! Our girls’ football team has encouraged new friendships to form and has been a super opportunity for new skills to be developed in a fun and encouraging way. We have three girls teams who will participate in Active School’s Football Festival at Broadwood Stadium. Let’s have fun girls!

Our boys’ football team (Wednesday lunchtime) continues to be a success and a popular club for those in P5-7. Our boys in P6 & P7 will attend Active School’s Football Festival at Broadwood Stadium. We know that our boys’ efforts during training sessions will pay off.

Some of our Primary 3-4 pupils have been attending our after school basketball club, delivered and supported by Miss Dalbeck and HND Students from New Lanarkshire College. The club has been well attended and pupils say that it is “GREAT FUN!” An after school gymnastics club will be offered to some pupils after the Christmas holidays (info to follow).

This is a small snapshot of all of the sporting opportunities that we offer our pupils at Condorrat Primary School. We believe that high quality PE lessons contribute towards the healthy and positive environment that our pupils learn in and create.
