Assessment, Recording and Reporting
Assessment is an important part of learning and teaching. This provides a means of checking progress and development. Assessment and recording are important so that:
- Progress can be charted and information passed on to teachers and parents
- Difficulties can be diagnosed and effectively dealt with
- Meaningful dialogue can take place with teachers, parents and pupils
- The transition from Primary to Secondary can be made more smoothly
- Parents are fully informed of their child’s progress.
How will my child’s learning be assessed?
Both formal and informal methods of assessment are used. The school will regularly assess your child’s learning by collecting evidence mainly from day to day teaching and learning. Primary ones will all be baseline assessed in September and June. Formative assessments such as GL assessments will be periodically used at different stages of their schooling. Professional judgement will be shared with the management team termly as part of the forward planning process. The head teacher will keep a folder of all formative assessments to help with tracking and monitoring. Staff will be involved in moderation activities to ensure a shared understanding of standards and expectations. The school is encouraging pupils to be fully active in their own learning and set themselves targets. Staff will share learning intentions and success criteria regularly so children can self and peer evaluate their work and contribute to their own learning plans.
Some of our checks are made by using:
- Small focused end of unit tests
- Looking at class work – jotters, notebooks, etc.
- Special assignments and homework exercises
- Standardised tests.
The children will also set personal learning targets termly.
Reporting to Parents
Parents are encouraged to contact the school if they have concerns about any aspect of their child’s education. In addition the school uses the following methods of reporting to parents:
- Parents’ Evenings – one in October, one in March
- Written Report on the pupil’s progress in curriculum areas, achievements and their future learning – in June
Staff will always be willing to discuss your child’s progress at any point throughout the year. The pupils will record achievements in their Achievement folders and outside achievements will be celebrated at school assemblies. Parents will be invited in to the school to view class assemblies and showcases throughout the school year.
