The school work very closely with Coltness High School to make the move to secondary school as stress free as possible. The Maths department from the High School visit the school weekly to work with the children and get to know them. Pupils from the high school come to Cleland to teach rugby, basketball and badminton to the oldest two classes for three blocks of six weeks. They are followed by a tournament at the high school with the other two feeder primary schools, Calderbridge and Cambusnethan primaries. The children are also invited to Coltness High for a Maths Challenge and a Modern Languages event. In addition the three primary headteachers meet regularly with the depute head teacher to discuss and arrange further opportunities for high school staff to interact with the children. The high school also provide an enhanced transition programme for those children who are particularly concerned about the transition. It includes additional visits to Coltness High for a variety of activities which make the children more familiar with the building but also allows them to meet support staff and other children with the same concerns in a small group setting.
All primary seven pupils are given the opportunity to attend North Lanarkshire’s Strathclyde Park for a range of outdoor activities. This is usually with the two feeder schools so they can increase their friendships before progressing to the high school.
