Mathématiques sans Frontières

Our Higher pupils took part again in this year’s MsF – a combination of hard sums and a question in French/German/Spanish.  The pupils enjoyed the competition and the snacks that went with it (for added brain power, of course!) and we sent off our answers.  We’ll see how we got on once they’re marked, but the pupils were able to answer nearly all the questions, so fingers crossed!

Here are some photos and the question paper.

Charlotte Geekie in Japan

In  October 2019, a group of 12 S6 pupils and 3 teachers went to Japan on a school trip funded by the Sasakawa Foundation.  They had an amazing time, and were lucky to get there before Covid stopped all trips of that kind.

Charlotte Geekie was one of the pupils who went to Japan, and she is now studying art for some months in Kyoto as part of her University degree in Scotland.  She has sent us some photos, below.

The Japanese Club takes place roughly on the first Monday of the month in Miss Muir’s room, S006, at 12.30 for lunchtime, and Fumi and Yushin, our Japanese friends from Glasgow, come to tell us about language and an aspect of Japanese culture.  All are welcome to come along and see what it’s all about!

S1 French Penpals

This year, 1T6 have been writing to French pupils at the Collège St Charles in Guipavas, in the north-west of France.  Here is a selection of the letters from the French kids.   French handwriting is so curly!

International Day of Languages 2022

Cumbernauld Academy was pleased to take part in the International Day of Languages in September, and here are some photos of the events.  S1 had fun with a languages-based treasure hunt, S2 had a big quiz, and S3 did posters on different language idioms.  And at lunchtime we had food from various European countries for pupils to taste, as well as a ‘Bush Tucker Challenge’ where they were blindfolded and asked to try some things for the more adventurous palate, such as sauerkraut.  Not everyone managed – but they were allowed to spit it out if they didn’t like the food.  The pupils enjoyed themselves and so did the staff.  Well done all!

Our S2 French pupils have recently been having taster courses (literally, in some cases!) in our other languages, German and Spanish. Here are some photos and videos of what food they got to try this morning in Mrs Ali’s class. Looks good!
