The health and wellbeing benefits of reading

Reading for pleasure has been linked to a reduction in stress and  the symptoms of depression. It has been shown that people who read books regularly are on average more satisfied with life, happier, and more likely to feel that the things they do in life are worthwhile.  [Reading Agency]

With so many young people experiencing mental health issues, it’s imperative that teenagers get support with anxiety, depression, eating disorders and other mental health conditions and difficult life experiences.

We have an excellent Pupil Support team here at Calderhead High School. With their help, we have created a ‘Shelf Help’ section in the Library, where pupils can read a wide variety of books concering health and wellbeing, both fiction and non-fiction. Many of these resources are included in the Reading Well Scheme and recommended by health professionals and young people with first-hand experience of mental health issues.

You can find more resources and links in the Pupil Support section of the website.
