Calderhead High School’s Library was transformed into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy to celebrate Harry Potter Book Night and pupils enjoyed a myriad of Harry Potter related activities. Mrs Crosbie started the event with an excellent Potions class, where pupils tried some magic experiments including catching goblin eggs, creating goblin slime and catching a bothersome poltergeist. Pupils were then ‘sorted’ into their various Hogwarts houses and visited Ollivander’s wand shop where they created their own magic wands. As Chinese New Year had taken place earlier that week, we were delighted to welcome Catherine Lumsden, a former Tianjin scholar, who taught us spells in Mandarin and some useful phrases to use when meeting Chinese wizards and witches. We finished the event with a spell casting competition and Robert and Logyne were worthy winners. A great time was had by all.

Children In Need Talent Show 2018
Staff and pupils at Calderhead High School were treated to an impressive array of talent at the school’s charity talent show on Friday, 16 November 2018.
The event was held to raise funds for Children In Need, a non-profitable charity which aims to support all children who are less well off whether it be through illness or poverty.
Our School Captains, Erin and David, were marvellous MCs and guided us through the myriad acts who participated in the talent show. We were all very impressed by the wonderful performers, who made us laugh and cry (and wince when we watched the leg waxing video). Special mention must go to S6 pupil, Fraser, whose sponsored headshave took place live on stage!
We have many fabulous singers at Calderhead and we really enjoyed hearing Madison, Morgan, Logyne, Yasmin, and a Turkish song from Stephen! Sophie and Carly sang a duet and birthday girl Heather accompanied herself on the piano. Ellyn also played the piano for us.
We were very impressed with Kevin and Andrew’s magic show and Riley, Nathan and Douglas’ “duelling” bagpipes and drums – we did try to clap along but couldn’t keep up!
Zuzanna and Heather treated us to a very limber gymnastic display and made us laugh with their choice of Muppets music.
The show closed with a spirited interpretation of “Baby Shark” by our staff dance troup.
Well done to everyone who took part and congratulation to all our wonderful performers.
You will also have an opportunity to see some of our talented pupils at “Calderhead’s Got Talent” on Monday 17th December at 7pm in the Assembly Hall. Tickets cost £2 with funds going to the Beatson Cancer Charity. Please come along and support our very talented pupils.
Mental Health and Wellbeing Conference
Calderhead High School hosted the Wishaw and Shotts Youth Forum’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Conference on 20 March. The Pupil Council from Calderhead and the other three cluster High School Pupil Councils heard inspirational speeches from Kira Melville from Clyde Valley High School, and adventurer and author, Paula McGuire, as well as attending workshops with Chris’s House, Landed, NL Active Schools and the Scottish Youth Parliament. The Wishaw and Shotts Youth Forum is one of six local youth forums who represent young people, organise events and fight for issues that affect them.
School Calendar
S1 parent night will take place tonight (12th October) and pupil photos will be taken tomorrow.
The school will be on holiday next week and we look forward to seeing everyone again on 23rd October 2017 at 8.55am.
Don’t forget that you can keep abreast of important dates by keeping an eye on our parental calendar or the school year page.
Cross Country
It has also been a busy time for our cross country runners. Two teams from Calderhead High School participated in the Scottish Schools Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at Dechmont Law on 5th March and contended with mud, biting wind, freezing rain and undulating ground to finish the course in good time.
Teams from S1 –S3 also participated in the North Lanarkshire Schools Cross Country on 16th March, again in very wet conditions. Well done to all the participants, particularly for coping with such challenging conditions. The S1 Girls “A” team finished 12th, the S1 Girls “B” 27th, the S1 Boys 21st, and the S2 Boys 15th. Well done everyone!
4th Year Achieve Christmas Party
St Patrick’s Primary School – Christmas Party
Calderhead High School enjoyed having our visitors from St Patrick’s Primary School. Before the younger children returned to St Patrick’s, pupils from the S3 Personal Development classes had a great time helping out the younger pupils at the Primary School Christmas lunch.
Ceilidh Fun
We’re ending this year with a birl and getting a chance to practice our social dancing! P7 and S1s had a great time at their Ceilidh on Wednesday afternoon followed by the whole school ceilidh on Thursday.
Physics Lecture – IET Christmas Lecture
Pupils from Calderhead High attended the The Institute of Engineering and Technology’s Christmas Lecture on 12th December 2016 in Glasgow.
The theme of the lecture was ” What Goes Up Might Come Down” and pupils enjoyed hearing Professor Andrew Rae, Professor of Experimental and Applied Aerodynamics, University of the Highlands and Islands, talk about aviation.
We now take air travel pretty much for granted but the comfort and safety we expect are achieved in a very harsh environment. At cruising altitude the air outside the aircraft cabin can be more than 50 degrees below zero and the air so thin that oxygen is essential. A few feet away from the cabin is a jet engine operating at a temperature of 2000 degrees Celsius when the materials it is made from melt at 1300 degrees Celsius.
The lecture used a series of practical demonstrations to illustrate some of the physics exploited in the design and operation of a modern airliner and other transport vehicles, including aerodynamics, materials and propulsion.
Zoolab Visit
Zoolab came to visit the Science Department on 30 November.
S1 and S2 pupils got an opportunity to learn about and handle some of the different insects and animals, including an enormous milipede, snake, spider, and green tree frog.
The pupils (and staff) really enjoyed the experience although Aiden admitted that he was (understandably) a “bit nervous” about the poisonous green frog and Evan was surprised that the snake was not slimy and in fact felt as “dry as sand”.
