Malawi
Four senior pupils, Elizabeth Gentleman, Morgan Lynch, Heather McCallum and Kate Sutherland, will depart for their trip to Malawi on 5 June 2018. They have a very busy itinerary, which includes visiting projects and schools, as well as gardening and renovation work.
Tinto Hill Challenge 2018
On Wednesday, 23rd May, our S1 pupils participated in the Tinto Hill Challenge in support of St Andrew’s Hospice. Our pupils enjoyed the walk up Tinto Hill in glorious sunshine and were delighted to complete the challenge.

Drumming Success
S3 pupil, Mackenzie, recently won an award in the Under 17s category at the recent Glasgow and West of Scotland Branch of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association drumming competition held at Coatbridge High School. Well done, Mackenzie!
Mackenzie also forms part of the North Lanarkshire Schools Pipe Band Novice B who were crowned British Champions on Saturday 19 May at the prestigious British Pipe Band Championships.

Endeavour Award
S3 pupils Matthew and Amber were delighted to receive a well-deserved Endeavour Award nomination from the West Scotland Deaf Children’s Society for their work in creating and presenting a whole school assembly on deaf awareness last year. Well done!

Easter Cake Competition
Well done to Scott, Jenny and Bekki who won this year’s Easter cake competition. The competition was judged by Stephanie Roth, Head of Department at Bells Food Group and our headteacher, Mr Robertson, and the standard of cakes produced by our S3 pupils was excellent, making it very difficult to select the winners.

Share A Story Competition – World Book Day
Congratulations to Kevin, Lauren and Jack who ‘shared’ their stories with us by writing excellent book reviews which really made us want to pick up their recommended books. Thank you also to all the S1, S2 and S3 pupils who participated and helped us celebrate World Book Day.

Tree of Knowledge
S4 pupils Carly, Caitlin and Dale, recently participated in a Tree of Knowledge residential weekend on the Isle of Arran with pupils from other North Lanarkshire secondary schools. They had a great time and learned some valuable life skills.

Fire Reach 2018
Well done to our S3 boys who attended an intensive five day Fire Reach course with Scottish Fire and Rescue Services. The pupils learned about teamwork, resilience, health and safety and first aid as well as experiencing the role of being a firefighter.

Radio Star
S4 pupil, Brianna, was recently interviewed by Stephen Jardine on BBC Radio Scotland about the Willlie Angus project upon which she and a number of pupils from schools in North Lanarkshire have been working. Read more about the project here.

Calderhead Rocks
Calderhead High School’s band, SITA, performed at the recent Rockfest Battle of the Bands competition in Motherwell Concert Hall. As one of the ten bands who passed the initial audition, SITA had to perform a cover song and their own composition.

Judo Champion
Over 700 keen judoka competed in the British Schools Judo Championships at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. Around 400 schools were represented over the course of the two day competition and we are delighted to report that S2 pupil, Emma Pringle, was awarded a gold medal in the Girls (Years 8/9) Under 52kg category. Congratulations, Emma.

Calderhead’s Got Talent
Calderhead pupils showed off their talent at the Talent Show in December, and we were extremely impressed by the breadth and variety of talent demonstrated by our pupils. The winner was the talented S4 pianist, Heather, who performed to great acclaim. Our School Captains, Jay and Nicole, and Heather were delighted to be able to present the money raised from this event to the Beatson Cancer Charity.

Robotics – part 2
Our senior robotics team recently participated in the VEX Robotics “In the Zone” competition at New College, Lanarkshire. Ceinwyn and Jason in S6 built an excellent robot which was required to carry out tasks such as stacking cones, scoring goals, and parking. They were narrowly defeated in the final and won second place. Well done!

Robotics – part 1
Our junior robot creators took part in the recent Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge at Forth Valley College. Each team had learned how to build, program and control autonomous LEGO robots to complete a series of aviation themed missions. Our pupils built their robots during lunchtime Lego Robot club sessions and worked out how to complete the missions. On the day of the competition, they also had to research, design and present their own solution to a contemporary engineering problem faced by STEM professionals in the aviation industry. Everyone had a great time and well done to all who took part.

Burns Night
Well done to all the pupils who performed so beautifully at the Burns Supper (or should that be lunch?) and Commemoration of the Bard in the school. Special mention to the multi-talented Douglas who piped and drummed at both events and a special thanks to all our talented pupils (and Mrs Prucnal and Mr Graham) who participated.

Pupils Hear Authors Live
S2, S3 and S4 pupils were recently chosen to take part in a televised ‘Authors Live’ event at the BBC in Glasgow. The pupils listened to a panel of authors talking about unheard voices in the writing industry and S4 pupil, Heather was chosen to put her question to the panel. The puils were then treated to a tour of the BBC studios and a chance to eat lunch in the BBC canteen. The event is still available to watch on the BBC website.

Author Success
S2 pupils, Kenzie and Jennifer, recently successfully participated in a young writing competition and their stories will be included in a book which will be published next year.

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award
As part of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, S4 pupils Brianna, Demi, Heather, Stephanie, recently joined pupils from St Aidan’s High School to take part in a Duke of Edinburgh Expedition which involved hiking and camping from Auchengillan Centre.

MacMillan Coffee Morning
S6 pupils organised a coffee morning on 21st September 2017 to raise funds for MacMillan Cancer Support. S6 pupils and staff were treated to an array of delicious cakes and biscuits at interval and participated in a raffle, and raised a fantastic £234.28 for the charity.

St Andrew’s Hospice
Our S2 pupils were delighted to present a cheque for over £1400 to St Andrew’s Hospice following the sponsored climb of Tinto Hill . In return, they were delighted to receive certificates celebrating their achievement.

Orienteering Champion
Congratulations to Jordan Muir who won the M14B race at the Scottish Orienteering Championships recently. This was an outstanding performance from a novice competitor.

Bookbugs
Our S4 Achieve Group helped celebrate Bookbug Week by reading to the Nursery children at Shotts Family Learning Centre. We very much promote reading for pleasure at Calderhead High School and it was great to see the Nursery children enjoying the stories.

Drumming Champion
Congratulations to talented S2 pupil, Mackenzie, who recently won the U17 West of Scotland Solo Drumming competition at the weekend.

Rugby Success
S2 pupil, Angus, and S1 pupil, Douglas, played for the winning Barbarians rugby team at a NLC rugby festival on Friday, 21 April. The Barbarians is a mixed team of pupils from Clyde Valley , Coltness and Calderhead High Schools who train together every week.

Cross Country Success
Two teams from Calderhead High School participated in the Scottish Schools Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at Dechmont Law on 5th March and contended with mud, biting wind, freezing rain and undulating ground to finish the course in good time.
Teams from S1 –S3 also participated in the North Lanarkshire Schools Cross Country on 16th March, again in very wet conditions. Well done to all the participants, particularly for coping with such challenging conditions. The S1 Girls “A” team finished 12th, the S1 Girls “B” 27th, the S1 Boys 21st, and the S2 Boys 15th. Well done everyone!
Rotary Challenge
S2 pupils Bekki, Emma, Lewis, Emma, Erin, Jordan, Kirstin and Amy and senior pupils, Ceinwyn, Dean, Jason, James, Kate and Samantha recently competed in the annual Rotary Club Technology Challenge held at Kilsyth Academy.
The four teams from Calderhead High School had to design a remote controlled vehicle which would fit under a bridge and clear debris from a pipe. All teams thoroughly enjoyed designing, testing and creating their vehicles and the opportunity to try out some new tools.

Vex Robotics
Senior pupils Ceinwyn, Samantha and Jason participated in the VEX Robotics challenge at New College Lanarkshire on Friday 23 February 2017 . There was fierce competition and the Calderhead High team narrowly missed winning the challenge.
Calderhead Robotics Club
Calderhead High School’s Robotics club (Dylan, Dale , Josh, Ethan, and Jamie) competed in the Tomorrow’s Engineers competition and designed and built a bridge from scrap wood to successfully carry a car.

Fundraising for Malawi

Knitting Success
Well done to Heather, Brianna, Stephanie and Demi in S3 who are part of Mrs Crosbie’s Knitting Club. They managed to knit 172 small hats for the Innocent Big Knit, helping raise funds for Age UK.

Hallowe’en Cakes
Congratulations to Hayleigh, who won Mrs Scognamiglio’s S3 Halloween cake competition on Friday 28th October 2016. The competition was judged by the Headteacher, Mr Robertson and Miss Wilson, Faculty Head, who decided that Hayleigh’s cake was the ‘most Halloween’. Well done Hayleigh!

Well done to S6 pupil, Caleb Hariri, who attended the Nuffield Research Placements Scotland 2016 Celebration Event at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh recently. Caleb took part in a Nuffield Research Placement at the University of Glasgow this summer.

Young Kennel Club Award
Congratulations to Jemma in S4, who won second prize with her dog, Nell, in the Young Kennel Club obedience competition at the Scottish Dog Show on Sunday.

Congratulations to Ewan Ferguson in S6 has been awarded a place on the Transitions 20/40 Dance programme at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Ewan successfully attended two auditions before he was awarded a place and will now undertake training at the Royal Conservatoire every weekend.
Transitions 20/40 offers specialist training and mentoring to young people who are interested in pursuing a career in professional dance – they must demonstrate ability and potential, together with the necessary commitment and determination to study dance at a high level.

Congratulations to S6 pupil, Eilidh Crawford, on her recent golfing successes.
Eilidh won the The Stephen Gallacher Scratch Trophy at the East of Scotland Summer Meeting and went on to win the East of Scotland Girls’ Championship the next day!
As well as forming part of the Mid Lothian girls’ team who won the Cuthbertson Cup, she was also part of the team who won the Scratch Trophy at the Morison Millar event.
Eilidh has also been invited to play in a friendly with the East team against a Spanish international team.

Congratulations to Caleb Hariri in S5 who has gained a Nuffield Research Placement at the University of Glasgow this summer. He will be part of a team investigating how stem cells convert to fat cells. This is a leading edge research project on the control of Diabetes.
Prior to this he will taking part for a week in the REACH Medical programme for aspiring medical doctors, also at University of Glasgow.

With the Scottish elections looming, the BBC want to represent the breadth of young people’s perspectives in all communities and Jamie will be involved in BBC TV, radio and online content. Well done, Jamie!
