Book Week Scotland

Calderhead High School celebrated Book Week Scotland in style this year. This is an annual celebration of reading and this year the theme was “Blether”. Twenty S1 and S2 pupils were awarded tickets to the Blether Bistro in the Library on 21st November to reward their hard work and progress in class. They were treated to a cup of hot chocolate and biscuits while they enjoyed reading their books in the library.

Pupils also participated in a creative writing competition and there were many excellent entries – it was very difficult choosing the eventual winners. Congratulations to Ryan in S1 and Bailey in S2. Well done to our runners up, Macy and Chloe in S1 and Neve and Carla in S2.

There was also a Book Blether in the Library on 20th November at lunchtime, where everyone was asked to talk about their favourite book, and, inspired by the Scottish Book Trust’s twitter challenge, the book group created a book domino run in the library at lunchtime on Friday.

Memorial Plaque

When you are coming into the school, you may notice our World War One memorial plaque mounted on the wall near the entrance. This had been on display in our previous building for many years and is now on view in our entrance foyer.Memorial Plaque

Food Bank Donations

Don’t forget to bring in your donations for this year’s Foodbank appeal!

The foodbank collections began on 6th December and will finish on 17th December.

Mr Purdie’s S3 Modern Studies class have been learning about all inequality in the U.K. , including how severe the poverty issue is. They would like to give the people in need some food parcels. The class have decided they will have a food bank collection for their local foodbank, the Trussel Trust Foodbank in Airdrie. This class has organised a meeting with the head teacher to explain why they are donating, creating posters and describing why it’s a problem which has to be fixed immediately and they are trying to raise awareness of this in their local area.

Their donations are being collected in the school, with points being awarded to the house to which each pupil who donates belongs. This will help involve a lot more of the pupils as the house with the most points at the end of the year receive prizes.

Pupils can put their donations in boxes which are situated at the school office. Pupils are trying to involve the local community as well as just the pupils in the school. The class are taking donations such as cereal, rice, and tinned food including tomatoes, fruit, soup, pasta, veg, meat, beans etc. Also toiletries would be helpful such as feminine products, toilet paper, shampoo and shower gel. If every pupils in the school donated one item there would be 500 meals to people who are starving throughout the day and night, but if everybody donated 2 items there would be 1000 items donated, this would feed a lot of people who are suffering from starvation.

Trip to Disneyland

EuroDisney 19The annual Maths trip to Disneyland Paris took place earlier this month. Forty pupils greatly enjoyed their visit to Euro Disney – they were given the opportunity to design their own rollercoaster and were very impressed with the results.  They also had a fantastic time visiting the parks and the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show.  Special thanks to the four members of staff who freely gave up their time to provide such an unforgettable experience for the pupils: Mrs Buchanan, Mrs Byrne, Mrs Johnstone, and Mr Leitch.

Dyslexia Awareness Week

Dyslexia Awareness Week took place from 4th to 9th November and Calderhead High School marked this with a display in the library of Dyslexia Scotland posters and dyslexia friendly books. Pupils also participated in a competition to find pictures of dyslexic celebrities which were hidden around the school. Congratulations to winners Kieran and Danny, and thank you to Calderhead’s Dyslexia Ambassador, Aiden, for presenting the prize.

Children in Need 2019

Calderhead High School held a talent show in the Assembly Hall on Thursday, 14th November to raise funds for Children in Need. Our School Captains, Kirsty and Brianna, hosted the event and were ‘puntastic’ – they definitely have a career as a comedy double-act!

What a wide breadth of talent we have here at Calderhead: Heather, Logyne, Carly, Lauren, Andrew, and Jennifer all sang beautifully; Ellyn and Heather played the piano magnificently; Caitlyn and Nicholas perfomed moving songs accompanied by some excellent guitar playing, and we also enjoyed hearing Caitlyn and Ryley on pipes and drum.

Special mention must also go to our brave pupils and staff who endured getting their legs waxed to help raise funds.

Lessons from Auschwitz

On 7th November, S6 pupils Jamie Reid and Brianna Shaw travelled with pupils from all over Scotland to visit Auschwitz in Poland. This is part of their work with the Holocaust Memorial Trust and the Lessons from Auschwitz Project. The pupils were offered a unique opportunity to be involved in a four-part course offered by the Holocaust Educational Trust, which consists of two seminars, a one day visit to Poland and a Next Steps project through which students pass on the lessons they have learned to the wider learning community. The Project is a journey of learning and exploration about the history of the Holocaust and about the world we live in. Brianna and Jamie described the whole project as a moving and thought-provoking experience. We are looking forward to hearing Brianna and Jamie share their experience with our learning community at Calderhead High School.
