History at Calderhead High School
At Calderhead High School, History is a key subject within the Humanities Faculty. It is delivered as part of the Social Subjects curriculum during the Broad General Education (BGE) phase from S1 to S3. Our History programme is designed to spark curiosity, develop critical thinking, and build a strong foundation in historical knowledge and skills.
Broad General Education (S1–S3)
During the BGE, pupils explore a diverse range of historical topics that encourage engagement with both Scottish and global history.
These include:
- Anne Frank & the Holocaust – exploring human rights, prejudice, and resilience
- Scotland and the Romans – examining early interactions and cultural change
- JFK: The Making of a President – understanding leadership and Cold War context
- The Scottish Wars of Independence – investigating national identity and resistance
- The Causes and Conclusion of World War I – analysing global conflict and its legacy
These topics help learners develop key historical skills such as:
- Chronological understanding
- Source analysis and interpretation
- Evaluating causes, consequences, and significance
- Drawing reasoned conclusions from evidence
History in the BGE also supports interdisciplinary learning and contributes to the development of the four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence: successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens, and effective contributors.
Senior Phase (S4–S6)
In the Senior Phase, pupils can choose to study History at various levels, each offering progression in both content and skills:
National 3, 4 & 5 History
- Scottish: The Era of the Great War, 1900–1928
- British: Changing Britain, 1760–1914
- European & World: The USA, 1850–1880
At National 5, learners develop extended writing, construct historical arguments and source-handling skills. Assessment includes a final exam and an independently researched SQA Assignment.
Higher History
- Scottish: Migration and Empire, 1830–1939
- British: Britain, 1851–1951
- European & World: The USA, 1918–1968
Higher History challenges learners to engage in advanced historical analysis, structured essay writing, and critical evaluation of sources. It prepares students for further study and careers in fields such as law, journalism, education, and public service.
