Literacy Across Learning
We enable pupils to build a set of skills which will give them the chance to engage fully in society, not just in an English classroom. Pupils will be given the tools to communicate clearly in other subjects in schools as well as outside of school whether that means socialising with friends or speaking to employers. Our focus will be on delivering skills to pupils that they will use regularly in everyday life. We recognise the importance of talking and listening and the effect of collaborative working in the development of thinking and learning.
English
The English department prides itself on the fact that we make learning an active process that involves pupil discussion and values the ideas and opinions given from individuals in the class. It is important that pupils are given the opportunity to enjoy their learning and have a choice in what they study and how they study it.
The English Department focuses on four main elements:
- Reading – reading for enjoyment, close reading of short passages and the study of extended literary text.
- Writing – creative writing, personal writing, discursive / persuasive writing.
- Talking – solo talks, group talks and presentations.
- Listening – listening to texts and listening to other members of the class before responding in appropriate ways.
