S3 Design & Manufacture

Course Intro

The course introduces students to the multi-faceted world of product design and manufacturing. The course combines scientific, mathematical and technological accuracy with design creativity and innovation. In the course students are encouraged to use imagination, creativity and logical thinking to apply practical skills. The course provides students with an opportunity to develop skills in the design and manufacture of prototypes, knowledge and understanding of manufacturing processes and materials and offers an insight into the impact of technology on our environment and society.

  • Folio work & research
  • Problem solving
  • Creative & logical tasks
  • Working with wood, metal & plastic
  • Knowledge and understanding of materials and manufacturing

After successfully completing the course students will be able to undertake:

  • Design & Manufacture (National 4 & National 5)

  • Using a range of research techniques
  • Applying a range of basic idea generation techniques
  • Evaluating existing products
  • Selecting and using a range of tools, equipment, software and materials in designing, making and testing prototypes
  • Using graphical techniques to visually represent design solutions
  • Basic knowledge of the impact of design and manufacturing technologies on our environment and society
  • Basic knowledge of manufacturing processes and the properties and uses of materials
