This week, we are going to take a closer look at the different types of risks to a computer system. The first task requires you to identify the websites that are a scam. Look out for things such as no personalisation (e.g. not using a person’s name), the full hyperlink used (as the link may not take you to the correct website) and spelling / grammar mistakes. For the other tasks, make sure you use the hyperlinks provided before answering in the spaces provided.

Monday 18th January 2021
This week, we will take a closer look at one of the most common risks to a computer system – a virus. As you will now know, a computer virus is a simple program made to harm a computer system. It spreads by duplicating and attaching itself to files. Sometimes the damage is minor but often it can be disastrous.
Your task is to research information about 5 famous computer viruses. For each virus, you need to type a short description about the virus, the estimated amount of damage (in terms of costs), and how the virus first started.
An example is the MyDoom virus. This type of virus first emerged in 2004 and is still regarded as one of the fastest spreading and most destructive computer viruses of all time. It spread by scraping email addresses from infected Windows computers and spread to victim’s contacts by sending a new version of itself as a malicious attachment. If the attachment was opened, the process would repeat and MyDoom spread to more victims. It cost an estimated $38 Billion worth of damage.
The deadline for this task is Friday 3pm. S3 Computer Security Task 2

The next topic you will be moving on to is Computer Systems. To begin with, we will learn about the threats to a computer system and how these threats can be prevented. Threats to a computer system vary from viruses to denial of service attacks. Precautions can be used such as anti-virus software and encryption.
