Small tortoiseshell butterflies

Hello today we will be talking about a small species of butterfly the small tortoiseshell 

We will be learning about:

  • What they look like
  • Where it lives
  • What it eats
  • Its lifecycle

Appearance

Their wings are a bright orange  colour with black and white stripes, black patches and some yellow patches. Their bodies are slightly fuzzy.

Where do they live

They live all across the uk in places like Scotland,England, Wales and also Ireland.

They are mostly found in gardens , parks, fields and more.

What do they eat

When they are just a caterpillar they eat nettles they are quite fond of stinging nettles.

When they are butterflies they eat nectar, thistle and dandelions.

Lifecycle

Then the adult emerges and transforms into a bright and colourful butterfly.

They start as an egg.

Then they hatch into larvae.

Then they become a caterpillar.

Then they build a chrysalis.

Fun facts

They are one of the first butterflies found in spring.

They are very active and can fly quite fast 💨 

They have lovely colours on the wings you can see but on the back they are all brown and look dirty.
