Assessment is considered an interstage in the school. Assessment is a continuous process that takes place in all areas of school life. Through on-going assessment we hope to build a complete picture of a pupil’s development, not only intellectually, but also emotionally, socially and physically. Continuous assessment of day-to-day activities is carried out throughout the school to enable teachers to assess and record the progress of individual pupils. This is done in a variety of ways, such as, observations and checking written and oral tasks. Such assessment may be confirmed from time to time by more formal testing to assess progress, to pinpoint areas of difficulty or to determine ability.
Information is given to parents by means of four reports each year. In the autumn term an interim report is issued to inform parents on how well their child is settling into school, parents are then invited to attend a pre-arranged meeting and class teachers will provide a more detailed oral report of progress and attitude to learning. In the Easter term a written report is issued and again parents are invited to visit to discuss this with the class teacher. Parents are welcome at any time to discuss their child’s progress during the school year. Information about a pupil’s attainment is kept in a pupil profile which is passed on from class to class. A pupil record is also maintained for every pupil and is passed on with the child when he/she goes to secondary school.
