Westfield Primary School

Vision & Values

Westfield Primary is a non-denominational, co-educational primary school covering stages Nursery to Primary Seven. Accommodation within the school is currently being used by a number of after schools clubs and is available for let by community groups.

Many varied activities are offered during the course of the school year. Pupils are able to take part in swimming events at local and area level, inter-school sporting events and sports training such as football, handball and volleyball. A variety of excursions with a curricular link are arranged for pupils throughout the year, and our primary six and seven pupils get the opportunity for a weeks residential stay at an Outdoor Activity Centre. The school has grassed and hard surface areas, a full size red ash football pitch, gymnasium and changing facilities.

Close partnership with parents is actively encouraged to ensure that children benefit fully from the services on offer. This is done through contact afternoons and evenings twice per year, open evenings and workshops, as well as children’s work folios being sent home. In the summer term there is an induction programme for the Primary One intake and their parents. Parents are informed of important dates and events within the school by regular newsletters and information sheets which are sent out.

The school is pleased to have the regular support and commitment of a group of parents and grandparents who lend a hand with day-to-day activities. Any parent is welcome to help on a regular basis or as helper on a class outing. The experience proves to be valuable for pupils, parents and staff alike. There is an active Parent Teacher Association, which works hard to raise funds for school equipment and provides social events such as children’s discos on a regular basis. A recently formed Parent Council is also in place.

Schools nowadays are seen more and more as an integral part of the communities they serve and close links are maintained between Westfield Primary and the Community Involvement Branch of Cumbernauld Police who give regular talks on road safety, drug awareness etc. There are also good links fostered with the school nurse and health visitors who arrange personal and social development programmes. We are always pleased to offer placements to teachers in training, students and work experience pupils from local secondary schools.

Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Westfield Primary normally transfer to Greenfaulds High School in Cumbernauld.
