Hello, welcome to Primary 6’s Class Blog!
Primary 6 pupils have settled in well to a busy first term. Below are some details of what we have been up to.
Literacy
Some of us have been reading novel studies to help us develop our comprehension skills. We have developed skills in visualising settings, understanding characters’ feelings and discussing writer’s craft. We joined lots of other schools for a live chat with author Matthew Fitt. Through this we learned lots of new Scots words and enjoyed some Scots versions of Roald Dahl’s famous stories. During writing sessions we have been developing our skills in report writing. We are becoming more independent in writing.
Maths
We have covered many different topics this year. We participate in a mental maths games, written tasks and online activities to develop a variety of maths skills. We also use maths fast finishers which include maths cards with mixed problems and partner games. We have focused on problem solving skills and are getting better at identifying which tools to use to solve different types of problems.
Health and Wellbeing
In PE we have developed skills in yoga and relaxation. This gave us the opportunity to improve our flexibility and learn more about keeping ourselves calm. We are currently working on team skills and ball handling skills through Handball. The Primary 6 pupils from Miss Quinn’s class joined us to look at different scenarios related to healthy eating, emotional health and mental wellbeing. We worked in our cooperative learning groups to discuss these topics. On a Friday afternoon we hold a Conversation Cafe in class where a small group get together to discuss similar health and wellbeing issues.
RE
Primary 6 joined Wishaw Academy to participate in the Bubblegum and Fluff workshop. Through this we learned more about the nativity story, we made our own religious Christmas tiles and enjoyed a puppet show and some songs. During October we joined in saying the Rosary every day and learned about the mysteries of the Rosary. In November we made a wreath of remembrance which displays the names of people we want to pray for who have died.
Science
This term we have exploring the topic of Sound Waves. We created cool art by using pastels to draw the sound waves of our favourite songs. We carried out small experiments to find out if sound travels through water, solids and gases. We found out that it travels through all of these things. We have also written reports on how sound travels.
Expressive Arts
We have created many pieces of art work including paintings of the Scottish Parliament, Autumn trees, Scales of Peace and Justice. We have also worked with pastels to create sound waves.
Topic
We have now completed our Scottish Parliament topic. During our topic we had a visitor from the Parliament who explained elections and parties to us. We also visited the Parliament building where we saw the Mace, the Debating Chamber and the famous steps where MSPs are interviewed on the news.
