Literacy
Primary 6/7 have been very busy this term. In language work we have just completed a block on Non-Fiction Reading looking at the various feature of these types of books and the compositional targets within writing. The children enjoyed this aspect of reading and were motivated to find out more information and facts on the topics covered. P.6/7 also created their own non-fiction books incorporating the features they learned had about.
Interdisciplinary
Primary 6/7 have been learning lots about the 1960’s recently. They have covered a variety of topics including Pop Art finding out about popular artists of the time including Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein and creating a few of their own inspired works!
We have also looked at the Civil Rights Movement around this time discussing the effects of views and attitudes towards others and looking at how civil disobedience and peaceful protest made a difference to the lives of African Americans in society. We focused on events which shaped the Civil Rights Act of 1964, including people and such as Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jnr, Brown versus the Board of Education and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, sit-ins and marches. We looked closely at Martin Luther King J’rs ‘I Have a Dream….’ speech and discussed the impact this had on the world and how it became one of the most well known speeches ever to be given. The children also created their own say no to racism posters and in writing expressed their views regarding racism, segregation and inequality in society.
Fashion
P6/7 have also looked closely at the fashion of the 1960’s and the radical changes that came about after WW2. We looked at attitudes, revolution, availability of money etc and also how people, icons, music and bands influenced fashion.
Mathematics
P6/7 have been focusing on whole numbers looking at place value, multiplication and division, rounding and more recently time. This has included revision of 12 and 24 hour format and converting from one to the other. The children have also looked at short/longer timed intervals and also reading and interpreting various timetables. In their groups the children have also been adding and subtracting units of time, converting seconds to minutes and seconds and minutes to hours and minutes. The Primary 7 children have further extended this with a focus on being able to read stopwatches and timed events whilst also looking closely at seconds being measured in decimal places and rounding these accurately.
The children of P6/7 have recently looked at Scottish and Celtic faith and heritage. The children researched their own surnames to find out where their families originated from making the link that Scottish Catholics and other Christians have, as part of their heritage, another culture and sometimes nationality. This diversity they learned, has enriched our society and that we continue to be enriched culturally and spiritually by new migrant communities. The children discussed the importance of being open , accepting and welcoming to everyone. We researched Pilgrimage sites across Scotland and discussed why these were places of pilgrimage. The children created leaflets with information about these sites and also discussed saints who brought Christianity to Scotland.
Catholic Education Week
The focus this year was ‘Developing a Community of Faith and Learning’. We looked at what we could do within our school, our home and our parish to create this community. We discussed the idea that we need to try to be more like Jesus and give of ourselves more. We discussed who is within our Faith community and how we can add to this creating a Faith Community acrostic poem. We looked very closely at The Beatitudes and how these are guidelines on how to live our lives in a loving way. The children discussed each beatitude and what it meant and also how they could follow and incorporate these into their own daily lives.
Lent
We have now entered the season of Lent and the children are thinking seriously about the commitment they can make during this time to show their love for God and their desire to follow him. We have discussed giving something up for lent as a sacrifice remembering the sacrifice made for us but we have focused on something we can do actively this Lent to show our true commitment.
