March 2013

This month we have been looking at different types of technology.  We investigated what makes things go/work e.g. wheels, electricity, batteries, wind, water etc.

We enjoyed identifying, counting, playing with and using money.  We made a shopping list, found out prices and paid for items on a visit to Scotmid. We created a cake shop in nursery, made a price list and took turns to be the shopkeeper and customer.

We used google maps to find places we know in our local area; identifying the Post Office, the sweetie shop, the hairdressers, the pub, the cafe, the chip-shop, Lidl, Greggs, Tesco, Doctors, Butcher and Chemist!  We used our new iPad to video and take photos of shops/places on our trip.

We had a daffodil tea where children entertained our visitors with some songs and gave  them a lovely bunch of daffodils.  The catering staff made us biscuits and cakes which we enjoyed with tea, coffee or cartons of milk.

The parents group arranged for the Easter Bunny to leave us some delicious Chocolate Eggs…yummy!

We were the first group to ever take up the Rice Relay Challenge for the charity Scottish Love in Action, and have raised over £900 to help feed, clothe, house, educate and provide medical care for 600 destitute children in the Indian State of Andhra Pradesh.

Here are some pictures of other activities we have been doing this month including Snow. Yes, Snow…IN MARCH!

January 2013

This month we have been learning about the Emergency Services, keeping ourselves safe and our Senses.

We had a visit from the Fire Brigade.

We got to spray the nursery with the water from the hose.

We sat inside the Fire Engine and looked at their torches. The smoke from a fire makes it very dark and you need a torch to see. The cab is very high up and we needed to get lifted into it!

We pretended we were driving our own fire engine!

We sang about 5 Little Firefighters standing in a row.

We played imaginatively with our own fire station.

We discussed dialling 999 and what things might constitute an emergency. We turned the house corner into a Hospital and had lots of doctors, nurses and patients.  We also looked at other ways to keep themselves safe e.g. crossing the road safely.

We hold hands when crossing the road. Zebra Crossings are a safe place to cross.

Traffic Lights and Pelican Crossings are another safe place to cross. You stop when the man is red and go when the man turns to green.

We practised crossing the road inside nursery too!

December 2012

Technical Problems! Hopefully this will post this time!

December was a busy month!  We performed our show ‘A Snowman At Sunset’ in front of a large audience of parents, friends and family. We hope you enjoyed it!

We turned our imaginative area into Santa’s Workshop to help him get toys ready for Christmas.

Outside we made an obstacle course for Santa to deliver presents; we had to travel on reindeer; climb up, down, under and over things; slide down a chimney or use a magic key to enter a house and leave presents. What a hard job Santa has, we were exhausted!

We had great fun at our Christmas parties. Our Children’s Committee chose which games we would play, what party food we would eat. Great job, guys!  Santa visited and left us a little gift to help with the long wait until Christmas Day!

November 2012

We learned about the Hindu festival of Diwali.  This is a festival of lights, and we made diva lamps and lanterns in nursery. They have fireworks to celebrate and we made our own display on the smartboard (it was VERY noisy!) We listened to the story of Rama and Sita and thought Ravana – the baddie with 10 heads was not a nice man!  We made puppets and acted out the story in our puppet theatre. We drew mendhi patterns and some of us drew Rangoli patterns outside with chalk.

Our maths focus this month was measuring. We enjoyed measuring lots of things and used different things to measure – for example our feet, our hands, a ruler, a piece of string, measuring tape, trundle wheel and even scales.

October 2012

We have been looking at some paintings by famous artists such as Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Da Vinci, Monet and Warhol. We drew, painted and made collages of our own.  Here is an example…

We had great fun at our Halloween Parties!   We played party games, douked for apples and listened to some scary stories!

There was a Princess Long Ago – One of our Princes and Princesses!

September 2012

We had a fantastic taster session from ROAR, where we had lots of fun and practised our footballing skills.

Footballing Skills

We pretended the football was treasure and we were pirates. We stopped the ball with our feet to make sure no-one stole our treasure!

Stopping the ball

We enjoy being outdoors, whatever the weather… here we are washing the windows!

Washing Windows

One of our Mums handed in a caterpillar growing kit. We have counted 5 caterpillars. We have been enjoying watching them eat their special food and crawling all over the tub. They are getting quite big now! Watch this space!

Welcome Back!

We hope you had a great summer – we’re sure your wellies were well used! We have had to wear our wellies and waterproofs in nursery a lot this month too!!

Big puddle bubbles

We have welcomed lots of new children and are really enjoying getting to know one other and having fun together.

Reading with friends

We are learning about our nursery and have been enjoying playing with all the new books and toys.

The boys and girls invented this game with guttering and balls.

Jubilee

To celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee, we held a Jubilee Party.

Although the Queen didn’t have her Coronation until 1953, we decided we’d have our own Coronation to join in with her Diamond Celebrations.

We made flags with different designs on them.

Making Flags

The Queen had guards to protect her from the crowds and crowds of people.

We had a procession down the corridor in school and all the classes lined up to cheer us!

The Queen’s Guards

This is our afternoon Coronation.  A Coronation is when a Princess is crowned Queen or a Prince is crowned King.

Getting Crowned by the Archbishop

Our morning Prince and Princess before the crowning ceremony.

Picnics

We had pretend picnics, real picnics and Teddy Bear’s Picnics!

Picnic

The Teddy Bears were hungry too!

Teddy Bear’s Picnic

We used a computer program, 2Simple, to make some charts.  This is the yellow group’s favourite fruits.
