Coin Multiplication – Peer Teaching

Today we were doing our CLIC challenges.  P4 were having trouble with the sum 48×7.  Primary 5 realised that they knew a strategy called Coin Multiplication which would help them to do this sum.

Primary 5 taught P4 how to make the grid and then how to do coin multiplication.  First of they showed the whole class and then they worked with 2 P4s to help them with some new grids.

Carmen thought it was good to have someone different from the teacher showing her something new.

Aimee thought that the P4s picked up the strategy quite quickly and it was easy to teach her peers.

Lorna thought that coin multiplication is much easier than doing it in your head as you have a grid to help you.images (1)

Energy

Today we are starting a mini-topic about energy.

The first thing we have done is to think about what we know about energy.  here are some of our ideas:

Max – electricity is energy and it comes from a power station.

Angus – iPods, iPads, smartphones and computers all use electricity.

Lorna – The calories that humans burn off are energy.  We get these calories from food.

Lewis – Electricity comes from pylons into our homes.

Carmen – Humans need energy.

Jake – Lightbulbs need energy.

Keavie – Energy makes things work.

Taylor – phones need electricity.

Abbi – You can get energy drinks.

Brooke – iPads need electricity

Cate – Cars need energy to run.  You need petrol or diesel.

Kali – humans need water for energy as well as food.

We went round the school to take photos of things that use energy and have uploaded some of them here.

We are going to find out more about energy – keep checking back for updates!

Welcome to Primary 4/5

Welcome to the first post on our Primary 4/5 blog.

Our topic this term is”Life in the 1980s”.  We have been looking at records that people have brought in from the 1980s and using modern technology to listen to downloads of the music from the App Store.   We have found out about inventions from the 1980s and we voted for the one we thought was the most important.  The personal PC won!
