We have looked at weather and climate and we have discussed what each one means.

Lewis – Weather means the type of weather a place is having at a specific time.  Climate is what usually happens over the year.

Taylor – There is a polar climate zone.  It is cold and dry all year round.

Aimee – There is a temperate climate zone.  The temperate zone is a mixture of weathers and changeable.  It is not too hot or too cold but just in the middle.

Jordan – Scotland is in the temperate zone.

Jake – There is a mediterranean zone.  It has mild winters and hot summers.

 

We will be learning more about weather and climate and will report back soon.

 

Today we went to the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

 

We made telescopes in the learning area with our leader Geraldine.  We liked putting the lenses into the telescopes because it was the final piece of the telescope and was ready to use.  We are taking them home with us tonight to look at the stars.  We hope to see lots of interesting things.

We also got to see how a thermal imaging camera would take photos of stars and we could see that stars are very hot.

 

We got to see memory metal which is metal that always remembers it’s original shape.  It is used for satellites and telescopes.

Today we researched how far away the planets are from the sun.  We created tables on word and then recorded what we found in our tables.

Together we checked we all had the correct information then we decided to measure out how far each planet is away from the sun.  The problem with measuring this was that one of the measurements was 45 billion kilometres and our school is absolutely nowhere near that size.  We made the measurements smaller and put them into metres rather than kilometres and this made it a bit easier for us.  This is called using a scale.

We didn’t realise that the first four planets in the solar system are so close together compared to the other planets.  The last 4 planet were very far apart from each other.  We just had room for the last planet Neptune at the end of the corridor before the main door.

The group who worked in the infant corridor didn’t have enough room for all the planets as the corridor was too short.

On the next nice day we will go outside and do this again.  We will try to fit in Pluto which is a dwarf planet and the furthest from the sun.

Today we went outside to measure.  We used trundle wheels, rulers and metre sticks.  We had to find two things to measure with each of these pieces of equipment.

We used different items to measure different things because some this would take much longer to measure with a ruler or metre stick.  Some items are smaller than others.

 

Today it was a dress down day at school because it was our fundraiser.  We have called this post banana-tastic because we have been learning about Fairtrade and that is one of the fairtrade foods we have been learning about.

Yesterday we had a visitor from the co-op to tell us all about fairtrade products and in the afternoon we made brownies using fairtrade ingredients.  We sold them at the bake sale today and they were so popular they ran out before some of us had a chance to buy one.  Also at the bake sale there was rocky road, marshmallow and banana kebabs, banana muffins, shredded wheat nests, top hats, chocolate chip cookies and banana loaf.  Each of the classes had made something to sell at the bake sale.

Tomorrow is a special day for us as we are raising our Green Flag for the first time.  The choir is going to be performing two songs and they are really looking forward to it. In the afternoon tomorrow we are getting the chance to watch The Lorax because it is an Eco themed film and it is a reward for all our hard work in getting the Green Flag.

Hannah – i liked the idea of imagination and the thought of a new thing

Cole – i liked making up funny twists .

Aimee – i liked doing my own story .

Keavie – i liked the twist in the tale .

kara – i liked doing my own as well .

lorna – choosing my own characters .

Lyall – i liked changing the words in my story .

Max – i liked that people were putting there best effort into it

Today was the first time any of the pupils in our class had seen a solar eclipse.

When it got darker it got colder at the same time as well as a bit windy.  When we were walking round to the playground we saw a little bit coming through the clouds but it wasn’t there for long and was quite dull.  We used pinhole projectors to look at the eclipse but they didn’t work so well because there were thick clouds.

 

One of our pupils had special eclipse glasses and we had a shot of those too but because it was cloudy we couldn’t see much through them.

 

When we came back into class we watched some of the eclipse live on the internet.

Aimee – I liked on the webcam how the sun seemed to change colour at different points depending whether there were clouds or not.

Hannah – I liked going outside to see the eclipse.

Codi – I liked how it looked liked the sun had a big chunk out of it.

Jordan – I liked when we went outside and we just caught a glimpse of it coming through the clouds.

Cole – I liked how it felt like night time and the sky changed when we were outside.

Kali – I enjoyed seeing it getting dark outside.

Keavie – I enjoyed when it got darker and colder outside.

Taylor – I enjoyed how it wasn’t windy when we first went outside but then it started to get windy as the eclipse was happening.

Today we have been learning all about solar eclipses as part of our Space topic.  We have been doing this today as tomorrow there is due to be a solar eclipse where 95% of the sun will be blocked out by the moon!

here is what we know about eclipses…

Max – when an eclipse happens the light in the area covered by the eclipse will be blocked out but it will return when the moon comes out of alignment with the sun and the earth.

Hannah and Abbi – an eclipse is an accident of nature but it is natural and unusual.

Cole – it will take years for another big eclipse like this to happen in our country.

Brooke and Taylor – the moon is in between the sun and the earth during a solar eclipse

Aimee- It happens when the moon comes in between the earth and the sun.

Today we all had new reading books and we did a prior knowledge task about each of our books.

lewis-I found it straightforward to find the facts as I used the book blurb and cover to tell me what the story is going to be about.

We know that the Hundred Mile an Hour Dog will have characters call Trevor, Streaker and Charlie.  We also know that

dog is difficult to look after.

 

We know that Aliens stole my dog will have a bay who has lost his dog and maybe the Aliens have stolen him.

 

We know that the Butterfly Lion is about a lion from Africa and a boy called Bertie.  Part of the story will also happen in England.
