Blessed John Henry Newman

John Henry Newman was born on the 21st February 1801 in London, the eldest of three sons and three daughters. His early education was at Great Ealing School and moving onto Trinity College,Dublin for his later studies.

John Henry Newman was ordained as an Anglican Priest in 1824 and converted to Roman Catholicism in 1846. In October of that year, he was ordained as a Priest in Rome.

Newman was elevated to the rank of Cardinal on May 12th 1879. He took upon the coat of arms which was modified into school badge and the Latin motto ” Cor Ad Cor Loquitur” translating as heart speaks unto heart.

On 11 August 1890, he died of pneumonia at the Birmingham Oratory. Eight days later his body was buried in the cemetery at Rednal Hill, Birmingham, at the country house of the Oratory.

In 1991, Newman was proclaimed venerable after a thorough examination of his life and work by the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints. One miracle was investigated and confirmed by the Vatican. Jack Sullivan suffered severe spinal issues and prayed to Newman, and in turn was healed. Cardinal Newman was beatified on 19 September 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. A second miracle is necessary for his canonisation.
