The Geography curriculum in S1, S2 and S3 at Saint Matthew’s is designed to expose pupils to the full breadth of this diverse and wide-ranging subject, while developing key geographical knowledge, understanding and skills through a variety of engaging topics and case studies.
Iceland Trip
In addition to classroom learning, pupils in the senior phase often have the opportunity to take part in a biennial Geography trip to Iceland — a truly unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience. The trip allows pupils to witness some of the world’s most dramatic physical geography first-hand, bringing many of the topics studied in class to life.
During the visit, pupils explore the volcanic landscapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula, stand at the Bridge Between the Continents, and experience geothermal activity at Gunnuhver, Geysir and the hot springs of Hveragerði. In the past the itinerary also included visits to spectacular waterfalls such as Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, the glaciers of Sólheimajökull, the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara, and the famous tectonic setting of Thingvellir National Park. Alongside the geographical learning, pupils enjoy experiencing Icelandic culture and the vibrant city of ReykjavÃk, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
