Our History

Kilwinning Academy was built as a replacement building for Kilwinning’s original secondary school, Kilwinning high school, which burnt down in 1971 from a massive fire with an unknown cause.

The current building opened to 1st year pupils in 1976, then to 1st, 2nd and a few 3rd year pupils in 1977 before finally opening to all other school years the following year.

We are a six year secondary school with a capacity of 1,330 pupils at one time.

Kilwinning Academy also has an Astroturf to allow the pupils to play football at break and lunch. This Astroturf was made in 2017 as it used to be a blaes pitch. It also contains an 80m running track alongside a sand pit so pupils can do athletics in PE.
