Term 3

We have had such a busy term with Play Projects, World Book Day, Parents’ Nights and our Scotland Assembly. It was great nice to see so many parents this term and share our learning with you.

Literacy

We have focused a great deal on Talk4Writing . The class has enjoyed learning stories, telling stories, drawing story maps and writing stories. What great imaginations everyone has! Our latest story, “Kasim and the Hungry Dragon” has inspired a great deal of discussion and led to lots of fabulous ideas. Everyone continues to read with their group and complete Higher Order reading activities. It is great to see the progress that children are making.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have covered a range of topics this term. These include measure, time and information handling. The children can practise all of these skills at home and demonstrate  their practical skills.  Multiplication and addition facts continue to be reinforced, as this has helped many children to develop greater confidence, and speed up their calculations.

Health

In PE we have been focused on large ball skills. Everyone has been practising throwing, catching, moving and finding space. We then worked on team skills and how to play games. It is so important to work together to try and score lots of points.

We have also spent the last two weeks participating in  “The Big Wheel and Walk”. This encourages pupils to think of the impact of travel, and to find safe healthy ways to travel where possible. Bikeability has also helped everyone to develop greater confidence in their cycling skills.

Reporting and Supporting Learners

This term  a new SWAY went out for each child focusing on a week of their learning. I’m sure that the children have enjoyed sharing these with you. You can also follow our learning through our Play Projects. Every month we publish a SWAY showing our learning. Links are in the Google Classroom or here.

Leaning can be supported by families  through our weekly Google Classroom activities and through Sumdog. Both of which can be accessed on a range of devices at home.

Thank you again for your support. We are now looking forward to warmer days and even more learning!

Term 3 in Primary 1

We enjoyed the 2 Book Days we had in school: World Book Day and Pilmuir Primary Book Day.  In Primary 1 we created our own stories called “My Naughty Dog “ and to help us in the planning stage we took it in turns to have photos taken with the naughty pet.

On  Pilmuir Primary Book Day we had a book swap and every child went home with at least one book to keep and enjoy.

A special thanks must go to Wastebusters who kindly donated some books to us for the swap, which allowed more choice for the children.

Left over books were donated back to Wastebusters.  It complemented our Eco Schools’ work,  to reuse and to recycle.

Here are some photos of the P1s reading the books they chose.

P7 Term 1

Literacy

We have been reading short non-fiction texts linked to our topic (How was it made?) this term.  The children have been engaged in discussions about the texts and have been able to share their thoughts.

We are continuing to use The WrapAround Spelling scheme to look at spelling patterns and words in more depth and the strategies we can use to help us spell words accurately.

This term we have read ‘Varjak Paw’ by SF Said as our class novel, and looked at the short story, ‘Zelda Claw and the Raincat’ to inform our own suspense writing.  We have been using the Talk for Writing method to help us learn these texts, innovate on them, and then write independently.

Numeracy

We have been focusing on place value and decimal numbers.  We have used a range of active learning activities to help us consolidate our understanding.  We’ve also linked our numeracy to the Dandelion Festival (reading and writing big numbers linked to the amount of potatoes grown by different countries), and our ‘How was it made?’ topic (using scale factor to start making a model of the Solar System).

Health and Wellbeing

Primary 7 have had weekly basketball lessons with Miss Masson and have also been practising their ball skills in netball lessons with Mrs Young on a Monday.

We refamiliarised ourselves with Zones of Regulation at the start of term to help us recognise, understand, and talk about our emotions.

Topic – the Dandelion Festival and ‘How was it made?’

Primary 7 learned all about how potatoes are grown, which countries grow the most potatoes, and what potatoes can be used for.  We then shared this learning at our school’s Dandelion Festival assembly in September.

We worked collaboratively to research the planets in our Solar System before using the information we had found to help us make a scale model of the Solar System.

Independent Learning through Play

The children have done lots of fantastic learning through play, developing a range of skills like teamwork, communication, and problem solving, as well as advancing their learning in other areas.  For example:

  • Hair salon role play area which has involved literacy (talking & listening) and numeracy (money, scheduling);
  • Watercolour paints at the arts and crafts table which will feed into our ‘How was it made topic?’ through fashion designs;
  • Experimenting with magnets which has furthered our scientific understanding of magnetism and forces;
  • The Kapla blocks have been very popular this term and have allowed the children to develop their teamwork skills to work on big projects. They have created some amazing models and tall towers.

Google Classroom

We post what we are learning daily on our Google Classroom so we encourage you to access this with your child and discuss their learning with them.

Next term:

Over the winter term our topic will be ‘Where do we come from?’ which will give us the opportunity to explore our history.  This will be supported by numeracy work linked to understanding time.  We will also be planning lots of fun activities in the build up to Christmas, including learning linked to whole school events such as the Christmas Fayre.

First term in Pilmuir Primary

It’s such a big, important step, starting school. Our new P1s have done really well settling in.  When we asked them at the end of the first day if they were going to come back, most children thought that they would give school another go. One or 2 were not so sure. 😁 But, come back they did.

Here is a Sway of the first week. You will need your child’s Glow login details to view the material.  Below, are some photos from the second week.

Primary 1/2 Term 4

Term 4 flew by very quickly.  We especially enjoyed taking part in the 40th birthday celebrations.  What a great event especially as we were allowed to share it with our families.

Talking about families, lots of parents and grandparents managed to come along to one of or outdoor playing sessions.  Lots of dens were built and fun was had by all.  Look at the Sway to see what they all got up to.  You will need your glow login to view it.

P7 termly update – term 4

Literacy

Writing – We have been developing our use of descriptive language and using literacy techniques such as similes, metaphors, alliteration and onomatopoeia to make our writing more interesting to the reader. We have been focusing on developing characters through using descriptive language and the techniques above.

Spelling – We continue to use the Wraparound Spelling progression each week to deepen our knowledge of spelling patterns, how words and sentences are constructed and used effectively. We deconstruct words to see how many syllables they have and to think of rhyming words.  We continue to identify the root words and use prefixes and suffixes to grow our vocabulary and how these change the meanings of words. We have also been identifying the different parts of speech.

Reading Comprehension Skills – We have continued to use the Higher Order reading strategies to deepen our knowledge and understanding of what we are reading – whether it be short previously unseen texts, novels or animations.  We have revisited predicting, clarifying, questioning and summarising skills.

Numeracy

During Terms 3 and 4 we have covered fractions, decimals and percentages and how these are all linked through the context of money.  We have revisited telling the time in 12/24 hour time and converting between 12/24 hour times using analogue and digital clocks.  We have explored reading timetables accurately, working out time durations and time zones around the World. Some of the children began exploring the relationship between time, distance and speed to answer word problems.  We are also exploring data analysis averages – how to find the mean, median, mode and range of averages.  We have also revisited adding hundreds and thousands and how to lay this out in a clear and logical way in our jotters.

H&WB

We have started to explore the use/ misuse of substances.  We have started exploring the safe use of prescribed and over the counter medicines.  We have also started to look at the effects smoking has on our body. We will also be exploring the effects of alcohol and illegal drugs.  The children have been surprised so far to find out that caffeine found in tea/coffee, soft drinks and chocolate is a socially acceptable drug.

During Terms 3 and 4 in PE, we have been developing our skills in badminton, football and volleyball. In each discipline we have focused on control, accuracy, tactics, teamwork and communication. We have also enjoyed another couple of sessions developing our skills in skateboarding.  We used a ramp this time for those children who wanted to challenge themselves even more.

Primary 7 have been planning the potted sports activities this term and have been busy trialling these activities and adapting them to suit the range of ages and needs across the school.  They have had fun trying out all the activities and providing feedback on how they could be improved.  Thank you to P6 for being our guinea pigs and trying them out for us too before the whole school completed them this week.

Outdoor Learning

This term we have enjoyed participating in play activities with the P2/3 class.  We have been using the new den building kits the school have invested in and have had lots of fun building shelters and dens.  We have developed a range of skills and become familiar with how to use the equipment safely.  Our creative thinking and problem solving skills have been tested lots!

IDL

Our IDL context last term was Global Goals – looking at sustainability and Fairtrade.  We have recently been discussing what makes a good birthday party and starting to consider what we would like to do to celebrate the school’s 40th birthday.  Our Term 4 focus has been ‘Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds.’ We have been learning about the dangers of substance misuse and the effects this can have on our physical and mental health. We have also been exploring the systems and functions of the human body. In preparation for the academy we have been exploring ways to maintain positive mental health, peer pressure and setting healthy boundaries.

Good Luck

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the children for their part in making this an enjoyable year for us.  We wish them all the very best in their continued education at Forres Academy and look forward to hearing how they are getting on after the holidays.

Riding for the Disabled

Riding for the Disabled Moray are back in operation after winter storm damage meant they could no longer use their Burgie location. They have secured new premises at Miltonduff and carried out extensive work in order to resume the riding sessions this month. There have been news articles in the local newspapers to publicise this and currently the Co-op have them as one of their featured charities.

P1/2 Play Blog – Term 2

We have been focussing more on skills that the children are developing through play, ones which are at the heart  of The Moray Skills Pathway, for children aged 3-18: Our first sway is based on the self-management skills our children have been displaying during play activities.

Remember, you will need your child’s glow login details to view it.

T and R teamed up to design a Christmas Tree out of Sticklebricks.

J was very proud of the obstacle course that he had made and coached the boys as they tried it for the first time.

G had used this game, of decorating the tree, a couple of times. On this occasion she was particularly pleased with the effect of  grouping the same type of decorations together. I thought it was very creative. Others thought the same, and copied her idea.

E got the balances out and put some dinosaurs into one bucket. She added a small animal to the other side and nothing happened. When it was explained how the balances worked she quickly grasped the idea. She was determined to find objects herself, to balance out the weight of the first bucket.`

The children certainly have had plenty of experience in developing Teamwork Skills, during their free choice of play activities.  They enjoy mixing together and there have been lots of occasions when we have seen groups and, sometimes, unlikely partnerships, really flourishing.  Shared interests have encouraged friendships and tolerance.  The children like helping each other, being together and having fun.  What a lovely group they are to be with.

Here is the second sway, featuring some of the Teamwork spirit we have seen.

G and G created an obstacle course together. A lot of the other children enjoyed completing the course.

AJ, J and J built the ramp with A. They had tried different designs during other play sessions and this was their new one, where they tried to run the cars off the bottom of the slope and into a box. It proved one of their favourite ramps.

A and C have caught the reading bug and talked about creating a game with the word cards. First, they read the cards together. This picture shows A telling C how that card should be sounded out.
