English is concerned with communication skills in four key areas: reading, writing, talking & listening. The department teaches and develops these in an integrated way involving a wide range of contexts and activities. The department also encourages and supports pupils in sustaining a programme of personal reading.

The English department at Forres Academy offers a number of activities and opportunities for pupils to pursue their interests. Frequent theatre trips are organised while visiting theatre groups and writers run workshops in the school. For S1-S3 there are film and book clubs which run throughout the year while in S3 pupils can opt into our Practical Journalism course and write for FANG. Regular study support sessions are provided for senior students. The department also supports pupils in entering a range of writing competitions and each year awards the Dufficy writing prize to an S3 pupil with a flair for writing in a variety of genres.
