P6/7S Week commencing 18/5/20

Hello everyone,

I hope you had a relaxing long weekend and are looking forward to this weekend ahead. The forecast is looking like it is going to get warmer with is a nice thought. Below is a list of suggested ideas for the week and some general information.

General Information

Our next class ‘Teams’ meeting will be on Thursday at 10:30am. Please join us to consider the following questions.

Rights Respecting School – Bishopmill Primary currently has a Silver Award holder for Rights Respecting School. Part of our journey towards gold is sharing with the pupils and our community what our focus is. This week we are focusing on Article 24 – Health Care – Ensures that every child has the right to the best possible health. There are further descriptions and possible acitivite in the link below.

Maths and Numeracy

Please continue with the work on Bestco. If you missed last week when we began it then you can get access to this in last weeks related work on the website. This week we are now looking at organising the home deliveries. Please click on the links below to support the learning for this week.

There are also challenges on Sumdog and Heinemann Active learn if you wish to do these too.

Literacy

Listening and Talking

This listening activity is also worthwhile as a mindfulness activity. Find a suitable location and with your eyes closed sit/lie/stand and listen for the different noises that you can hear over the period of one minute. Once this is completed do it again and try and listen for sounds you haven’t already heard. This can also be a good way of relaxing.

For an extension you could do it in another location and compare the sounds.

Writing

Personal writing – Can you write down your thoughts about your next academic year. This can be a helpful way to discuss relevant points. What are you looking forward to, what concerns do you have? You can take the writing in whatever direction you want. I have included a guide below to help structure your writing.

Paragraph 1 – Tell us what you are doing next academic year? Is it secondary or primary 7? You could reflect on this year

Paragraph 2/3/4 (you choose) – Let us know about what you are looking forward to or any concern. Explain why. Take a new paragraph for each point.

Final paragraph – What are your hopes for the future over the year. Hopefully this a positive thought to finish on.

Reading

Please continue to read home novels, Newsround, Newspapers, etc. The pupil could read part of it to somebody else. Then the pupil could ask the listener some questions about the bit they have read to test the listener. Whilst reading, asking questions can help develop the pupils understanding.

Health and Wellbeing

Again Miss McNab has her challenge available. It is available here https://twitter.com/MissMcNab2020

Or on the school website. Mrs Taylor’s music section is also available online too.

I have decided to improve my skipping. Can you improve yours? It is an excellent way to help maintain and improve fitness. Already good at skipping? Learn some tricks (advice available online) and film yourself. Send them to me so I can try and get some tips too. I might even post my attempts.

Topic – STEM

Taking inspiration from P4WN can you build a marble run? How long can you build it? What resources could you use. Although great independent fun (although lots of adults like to get involved) it can lead to other forms of learning like the ones below.

  • Friction
  • Measure length, height
  • Speed, distance and time
  • Gravity
  • Problem solving

Look at P4WN twitter page for some inspiration.

Transition

We have recently had an email from the Elgin Academy Librarian, Mrs Toonen. We have already been to the Academy library as part of our transition. We usually return to the library for a second transition event about this time. On the lead up to the second visit, pupils are usually asked to design a poster for a film. They focus this on a book they have read recently and then go on to talk about their books. They also usually get to enjoy the books and beanbags in the library. Mrs Toonen has asked if pupils could still design the posters sharing their personal reading choices. Mrs Toonen will then be able to display these in the library once pupils have began secondary school and taken their posters with them. Therefore these posters could be done over a longer period of time.

As always, our school focus is on your wellbeing. Please do not feel pressurised into completing the above task. I am always here to help so please do not hesitate to contact me at any point.

Kind regards,

Mr Stuart
