P4/5 Term 4 Week 6 18/05/2020

Good morning P4/5.  I hope you have had a good weekend and have managed to keep busy.  Mrs Gee and myself thoroughly enjoyed our Team meeting last Tuesday and hope even more of you can join us this week. It was just lovely seeing your smiles and photos of your various activities.  This week we will be having our meeting on Wednesday at 3.00pm.  If you do not want to speak you can still join us and listen to what your classmates have been doing.  If anyone is unsure how to join you can view a video on the main page of Bishopmill Primary School or contact Mrs Gee or myself.  The more the merrier.

Here are this week’s suggestions for activities.  Please do not feel under any pressure to complete them quickly or even complete them all.  You can always carry some of them forward to complete over the next few weeks.  Many of you are doing other fun activities that are developing so many skills.  Remember that it’s really important that you try and get outside or do some form of exercise.  We are looking forward to seeing some of your completed work or photographs of you completing the activities.

 

Numeracy

This week we are going to do some work on Place Value.  Feel free to go as high as you can manage.  Below are examples of how we would like you to practise.

Tens of Thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Units

Number – 26373.  20000 +6000+300+70+3

Number – 45204.  40000+5000+200+00+4

Then write the numbers in words – twenty six thousand, three hundred and seventy three.

Forty Five thousand, two hundred and four.  Remember, if you are working towards Level 1 you can do 4 or 5 digits.

Challenge:  Try adding 10, 20, 100, 200 etc and write the new number out in digits.

Try to get someone to write down some numbers and ask you the value of different digits.   Challenge yourself to see how high you can go!  There have also been challenges placed on Sumdog – one each for Level 1 and Level2.

Get a pack of playing cards.  Choose some of the numbered cards and make the largest and smallest number you can.

Lastly, keep practising your multiplication tables.

 

Literacy

Writing – This week we would like you to practise speech marks.  We would like you to think of a fairy tale or nursery rhyme but keep it a secret! SHHHH!  You are then going to write a short play (It doesn’t have to be the full story if you choose a fairy tale).  You can ask brothers or sisters to help you to perform it to others in your household.  If you perform on your own you may have to play different characters so try changing your voice.  Here is an example:-

“I’m going up the hill to fetch a pail of water!” Jack shouted to Jill.

“Why are you doing that?”  Jill asked.

“Because that’s where the well is.” Jack replied.

Things to notice

  1. Speech marks begin before the sentence starts.
  2.  The first word after the speech marks must begin with a capital letter.
  3. You must punctuate the end of the sentence. (Full stop, question mark, exclamation mark)
  4. The closing speech marks come after the punctuation followed by  who said what was spoken.  Try not to keep repeating the word ‘said’.
  5. The very end must have a full stop too.
  6. Include a title.

Practise your little play but only speaking the words inside the speech marks. (Maybe put a Do Not Disturb sign outside your bedroom door or go out to the garden while you practise).

Then get dressed up ready to perform.  Use old clothes, sheets etc.  Make or find props.  E.g. masks, shields, hats etc.

Perform to your audience once you’re ready and see if they can name the story you are telling.

Rights Respecting Schools

This week we are looking at Article 24.

Definition – Governments must provide good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food, and a clean environment and education on health and well-being so that children can stay healthy.

**This is a suggested list of things you can do.  One is enough.**

Make a poster showing all the ways you can stay safe.  You can include pictures and make sure your writing stands out.

Make a list of people who can help you stay safe and/or healthy.

Make up a plan for a healthy packed lunch that you could have as a picnic.  if you have a garden you could eat it there or in the park or at a beach etc when you are able to.  As an extension you could design or even make your own packed lunch box/bag.

The new hospitals that are being built are called Nightingales.  Who are they named after and what did this person do to enable the right to good quality healthcare?

Make a list or a poster of what you are doing to keep safe at this difficult time.  Include things that whoever takes care of you is/are encouraging you to do.

Make up a circuit.  It could be outside or even in you bedroom.  You could number each obstacle then throw a dice and set yourself a time to see how many you could complete in a set time.  Why not set up a challenge against other family members.

Find a song or piece of music you really enjoy and make up a dance which you can perform to family or even friends on social media.  Maybe they would like you to teach it to them.   The choice of dance styles is huge and could be anything from ballet to hip hop.

Topic

The Aztecs were a nomadic tribe from northern Mexico.  Tasks for this week which you can do in the form of a fact file, a poster or maybe a PowerPoint presentation.

Try to find out what the words Nomadic and Aztecs mean.  What other names did the Aztecs call themselves?

Another task for this week is to find out about at least 3 of the gods that they worshipped.

Finally, the Aztecs produced beautiful artwork.  Look at the designs of how they depicted their gods.  Using pen or pencil can you do your own version of an Aztec god.  Some of them looked quite scary and have great detail so we’re looking forward to seeing what you can produce.  Let your imaginations run wild !!

Science

This week think about materials.  Your challenge is to design and make a boat that will float for at least 2 minutes and it must contain an object(s) weighing at least 40g.  Things you need to think about:-

Which materials are waterproof or not.

Does the area of the bottom of the boat make a difference? Remember, area is the size of the surface.

Weighing objects or checking labels.

What worked and what did not?  Why did it not work?  How did you fix it?

Time.  It will be easier to start timing when the minute hand hits a number if using an analogue clock.

Don’t stop if your boat goes past 2 minutes.  We might have a future engineer on our hands if it floats for much longer than that.

**ATTENTION**  You cannot use something that has already been  made.  E.g. a butter tub or takeaway carton.
