P2C Learning for Term 4 week 1 (beginning 13.04.20)

Good morning to you all. We hope you were able to enjoy your Easter and the Easter bunny still managed to visit, despite the circumstances.

Here are some more suggested activities to help to keep you busy this week.

Do you fancy a morning starter challenge? If so, have a go at Boggle. Set up your boggle squares with the letters:

a     n     e     p     i     t     m     s     l

Reading: Choose your favourite book and read it with a grown up or see if you can find it on Youtube. Think about what the story is about. Who is the main character? Where is the story set? Can you design a new front cover that gives the reader an idea of where or who is in the story?

Writing:  Story Writing – Write a new adventure for Paddington. First think about what will happen in your story at the beginning (introducing the characters and the setting), middle (the main ideas of your story; perhaps an issue that needs to be sorted and how it is being dealt with) and the ending (how was the issue dealt with). Draw a picture of your story, visualising the plot of the story will help you to write it.

Things to consider when writing the story:

  • the title.
  • a character.
  • what happens in the story.
  • how the character felt.
  • describing words (adjectives).
  • capital letters/full stops/neat writing.

Encourage your child to think of the context for the story. Here are some ideas to start them off:

  • Paddington goes to the water park.
  • Paddington goes to the fire station.
  • Paddington goes on holiday.
  • Paddington finds a big red box. (What’s in the box?)

* Writing is a process therefore it does not need to be done in one sitting. In school we usually start with the picture – if they can include detail in their picture, then they can include detail in their writing. The next day they can write it all or just a part of it. This is the approach we would use in school.

Numeracy: Login to Sumdog. We have set you a new challenge – Summer Sums 1. Good luck.

The following sums will challenge you to work out some addition and subtraction calculations. Each set uses different numbers eg. 2 digits +/- 1 digit, 2 digits +/- 2 digits (10s), 2 digits +/- 2 digits, 3 digits +/- 1 or 2 digits. (Parents, you can easily substitute the numbers for similar ones using the same rules.)

Choose a set of numbers and work out the answers. If you manage them, challenge yourself to do the next set.

Health and Wellbeing and Technologies – Food: With the help of an adult make a healthy sandwich (or any healthy dish you would like), talk to your adult about food hygiene and safe handling of equipment (e.g. knife, mixer, blender etc.). Talk about the kinds of food that are good for you.

Watch this video on healthy eating for kids. There are other links to other clips if you wish to watch them: Fruit and Vegetables, Dairy, Protein, Starchy Carbohydrates, Foods We Need to Less Often. Please don’t feel that these are a necessity, it is only if you want to find out more.
