Welcome back everyone,
I hope you had a relaxing long weekend and are looking forward to this weekend ahead. The forecast is looking like it is going to get warmer which is a nice thought. Below is a list of suggested ideas for the week and some general information.
General Information
This week I am aiming to call every parent/carer in the class to have a catch up and gather some feedback on Home Learning, navigating GLOW, digital support, RRS Article 24 and anything else you wish to speak about . This will be from a private/withheld number so if I don’t catch you for whatever reason, I’ll leave a voicemail and try you again at some point. I hope to speak to everyone by Friday afternoon.
Our next class ‘Teams’ meeting will be on Wednesday at 12:00pm. Please join us to consider the following questions ; How do you stay healthy? Examples of Article 24 in daily home and school life. What did you create in SCRATCH? Which books will your poster be based on & why? School memories & favourite year at school P1-P7 (maybe it wasn’t Bishopmill), BESTCO queries & Sumdog progress + what is your personal fitness target and how are you progressing so far this week.
As we continue our Home Learning, we would like to support our parents/carers and children by maintaining their awareness of the UNCRC and SDG’s. We will be using Rights to frame lessons, tasks and activities in our weekly Home Learning and asking pupils to identify Rights as they naturally occur in daily life. We are aiming to reach the same goal- Gold Accreditation from UNICEF as a Rights Respecting School. To support this there is a colourful resource that summarises the Right of the Child and is easily accessible for children and adults. This week’s article is Article 24.
RRS – Article 24
Governments must provide good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food, and a clean environment and education on health and well-being so that children can stay healthy.
How many ways can you think of to be healthy? Take 5 minutes to brainstorm and jot them down.
Maths and Numeracy
BESTCO
Big news! You have just been appointed the manager of a new supermarket – BESTCO. Your first job is to sort out some of your staff members working shifts. You also must sort out the holidays too. Click on the links below to get access to the two challenges.
Supermarket Activity – Clocking In
Supermarket Activity – Holiday Rotas
Sumdog – There is a Moray Maths Challenge that runs this week, so log on and Sumdog will set you a range of questions based on your ability. Where will you rank across Moray? I will post daily snapshots of pupil and school placing. I can also set specific skills on Heinemann for anyone who wishes. Please email me through GLOW.
Literacy
Listening and Talking
This listening activity is also worthwhile as a mindfulness activity. Find a suitable location and with your eyes closed sit/lie/stand and listen for the different noises that you can hear over the period of one minute. Once this is complete do it again and try and listen for sounds you haven’t already heard. This can also be a good way of relaxing.
For an extension you could do it in another location and compare the sounds.
Writing
Personal writing – Can you write down your thoughts about your next academic year. This can be a helpful way to discuss relevant points. What are you looking forward to, what concerns do you have? You can take the writing in whatever direction you want. I have included a guide below to help structure your writing.
Paragraph 1 – Tell us what you are doing next academic year? Is it French or German? Will you join a group or club that you know of? You could reflect on this year.
Paragraph 2/3/4 (you choose) – Let us know about what you are looking forward to or any concern. Explain why. Take a new paragraph for each point.
Final paragraph – What are your hopes for the future over the year. Hopefully this a positive thought to finish on.
Reading
Please continue to read home novels, Newsround, Newspapers, etc. The pupil could read part of it to somebody else. Then the pupil could ask the listener some questions about the bit they have read to test the listener. Whilst reading, asking questions can help develop the pupils understanding.
Health and Wellbeing
I have decided to improve my balance through Yoga. It is an excellent way to help maintain and improve fitness. Already good at Yoga or balance? Choose something you wish to improve on – it could be your speed, stamina, number of keepy up’s, dance spins, flips or cartwheels, accuracy of your passing. Whatever it is, set a target and work towards improving. Film yourself improving and achieving and share it via GLOW email or Twitter.
Again, Miss McNab has her weekly ‘Where am I?’ challenge. It is available here : Where am I? 13th MAY
Mrs. Taylor’s music tasks are available too.
Topic – STEM
Taking inspiration from P4WN can you build a marble run? How long can you build it? What resources could you use. Although great independent fun (even if lots of adults like to get involved) it can lead to other forms of learning like the ones below.
- Friction
- Measure length, height
- Speed, distance and time
- Gravity
- Problem solving
Look at P4WN twitter page for some inspiration.
Transition – Art & Design
We have recently had an email from Mrs. Toonen who is the Elgin Academy Librarian. We have already been to the Academy library as part of our transition. We usually return to the library for a second transition event about this time. On the lead up to the second visit pupils are usually asked to design a poster for a film, focused on a book they have read recently and talk about their books. They also get to enjoy the books and beanbags in the library. Mrs. Toonen has asked if pupils could still design the posters sharing their personal reading choices. Mrs. Toonen will then be able to display these in the library once pupils have begun secondary school and taken their posters with them. Therefore, these posters could be done over a longer period of time. This is an opportunity to show your creativity and design through various forms of media to turn your book into the next box office blockbuster.
Have a great week and speak with you all soon.
Kind Regards,
Mr. O’Neill.
