P3/4M Home Learning Activities – Week Beginning 27th April 2020

Hello parents and carers,

Well another week has passed in ‘lockdown’ and although this continues to be a challenging time for all, we hope that this lovely weather is keeping everyone upbeat. As mentioned last week it appears that home learning will be continuing for the foreseeable future and with this in mind, we are continuing to prepare a range of activities to support you at home. Please remember this is only a guide and our message is to do what you can, when you can. There is no expectation to complete all the activities as we are fully aware that everybody’s circumstances are different during these challenging times.

Communication through Glow and Microsoft Teams

Last week all pupils were issued your Glow usernames and passwords. Glow allows you to access Microsoft Office for FREE! You can also access a range of great educational resources. Glow is another avenue that allows you to contact us directly via email (you can still post pictures on Twitter). On your launchpad there is a ‘Mail’ tile, this is the one to access your Glow email. We have sent you all a little email, saying hello, so that you have our email addresses

This week we are introducing our class ‘Teams’. Microsoft Teams is a secure platform we are using to further improve communication between teachers, pupils, parents and carers. The package ‘Teams’ is available through pupils’ GLOW accounts which you were previously encouraged to register with. You should have received a text about this but if not then email the school office in order to receive the text.

If you have not registered yourself/your child onto Glow, then you will need to do this before you can access Teams. Please follow the video below to register your pupil(s) Glow account. If you have previously completed this, please read the next paragraph.

Please follow the video below to get yourself/your child onto your school class ‘Teams’ page. We have created the class ‘Teams’ page and it is ready for you to use. This page allows teachers to use a chat room to speak directly to pupils or parents.

Conservation

Learn about ocean conservation while diving deeper into the challenging lives of sea turtles.

The sea turtle toolkit provides a resource guide and six activities around this iconic species, the threats they face, and what we can do to protect sea turtles for generations to come.

Writing

Writing this week is to write a poem about springtime. It can be an acrostic poem or a rhyming poem. I will leave it to you to decide. Think what happens in our gardens during spring, about blossom trees, daffodils and all the lovely buds which are bursting into life. Think about new life and new beginnings; about lambs bouncing in fields and little baby birds hatching in nests. Think about the weather and how it is getting warmer and the days are getting longer. Your challenge is to try and use lots of super adjectives in your poetry.

Maths

This week we will be focusing on developing our numeracy skills with money.

Top Marks has a range of games that will practise your money skills. Can you make amounts using the least number of coins/ notes? Can you add up the total of different items using your addition skills? Can you calculate and give the correct change? These games are fun, and you can work at your own level.

Money at Home

Why not create a shopping list of the items you would ideally like from the shops. Can you lay it out like a shopping receipt? Can you calculate the total and work out the change you would get?  If you would like an extra challenge, why not create your own corner shop using toys and items from around the house and practise your calculations further.

Sumdog

Well done to everyone who completed their Maths Challenges on the Sumdog website. This week we have set a multiplication challenge to practise your times table knowledge. If you have issues accessing Sumdog please contact us via Glow, Twitter or our school email.

 

Health and Wellbeing – (Choose at least one of the following options…)

Acts of Kindness

Why not make someone’s day by completing the activities on the attached ‘Acts of Kindness’. Each time you complete an activity, colour in the heart. How did it make you feel? How do you think your actions made others feel? Can you think up your own ‘act of kindness’? Share some photos of your acts of kindness on twitter or on our teams page on Glow.

Gardening Challenge

Can you help out with plants in your home or in your garden? Can you help plant some seeds or tend to what is already growing? Imagine you could design the ultimate garden – what would you include in it?   Can you include something special for each member of your family?  Draw and label your design and share it with your family.

 Reading

We understand that it can sometimes be challenging to find free, high-quality reading resources for you at home. In the attachment below are a variety of websites with some excellent varied topics to read about. Choose at least two websites and make a list of all different articles you have read. See if you can challenge yourself to read at least 5 articles.
