Home Learning Activities – Week Beginning 15th June 2020

Hello parents, carers and pupils,

We cannot believe that it is almost the end of term! We hope the children enjoyed taking part in our ‘Superhero’ theme last week. This week we are continuing with themed activities and as the children have requested we have chosen ‘The Zoo’ as our theme for learning. So just like last week all the learning activities are based on ‘The Zoo’! Thank you to everyone who has been communicating with us via Glow email, Twitter and MS Teams. Please remember this is only a guide and our message is to do what you can, when you can. There is no expectation to complete all the activities as we are fully aware that everybody’s circumstances are different during these challenging times.

Design Your Own Zoo – Map Making Skills

Draw a simple map of your zoo. Here is an example to give you an idea of what it might look like.

Personal Writing

Title – My Ideal Zoo

This week we would like you to design your own zoo and create a map for it. Have a little look online to see what other Zoos are like and see if you can find any information leaflets with maps in them.

Think of the following questions to help you write about what your zoo would look like:

  • If you ran a zoo what changes would you make?
  • Which animals should go where?
  • Should the bears go next to the fish?
  • Why shouldn’t the snakes be in the same cage as the birds?
  • How would you get the animals?
  • Would the animals always live in the zoo?
  • Would you have a research area to help conservation?
  • Would large animals like elephants and whales live in your zoo?
  • What sort of people would work in the zoo?
  • What would you do to ensure the animals are happy and well looked after?

Zoo Poems

Read through the three famous Zoo poems attached and if you feel inspired, write your own piece of poetry (any style you wish) about your new zoo.

Zoo Maths Activities

Position and Movement.

This week we would like you to practise reading and plotting co-ordinates. Remember the phrase Mrs Stewart always said in class ‘along the corridor and up the stairs’ i.e. go along the bottom first then count how many up.

We would like you to create an 8-point compass rose. Look at your Zoo plan and imagine you are standing in the middle of your Zoo. Create clues as to what lies in the direction of the different compass points. e.g. North – It has a long neck to eat leaves high up in the trees (giraffes). Give your map, the clues and the compass rose to a family member. Can they work out which animals you are referring to?

The Mystery of the Missing Macaws

This week we also have a mystery for you to solve. Use your maths skills and knowledge to solve the questions. The answers will help you solve the mystery of who let all the Macaws out of their enclosure.

Sumdog and Heinemann Active Maths

Remember to continue to practise your maths skills and knowledge by playing online games in Sumdog and Heinemann Active Maths.

Health and Wellbeing

This week we will be focusing basic needs for all and how we care for others. In this case we will be relating this to how Zookeepers look after different animals in a zoo and ensure that their basic needs, health and wellbeing are cared for. Take a virtual tour of a Zoo and listen to the zookeepers talk about the animals and how they care for them. Complete at least one activity from this week’s Health and Wellbeing Grid.

Article 28 – Definition & Activities

Definition – Article 28 – The Right to Education

Every child has the right to an education.

Primary education must be free and different forms of secondary education must be available to every child.

Discipline in schools must respect children’s dignity and their rights. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.

Introduction Thinking Question – Think of as many reasons as you can why education is important for children and young people. Share and discuss your ideas with and adult or older sibling at home.

Please choose from one of the following activities:

  1. Create your ideal timetable for a week at school or home. Provide a quality education.
  2. Create your ideal teacher. Draw an outline and write what makes a good teacher https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4p5286T_kn0 – Be a Mr Jensen!
  3. What makes a good learner? Invent a cartoon character to represent a good learner.

Class Check-In

Our class check in will be on Tuesday at 2pm.  As this is our last class check-in for this academic year, we would like you to think of a favourite memory of your time in P3/4DS and share it during our meeting.  We will be very sad to say goodbye to you and wish you the best of luck in your new class.

We hope you have a lovely week.
