P4/5 Week 10

Good morning everyone.  I hope you are all well and are keeping positive!  Remember, the following activities are suggestions so just do what you can.  I know some of you are using your own resources and that is fine too.

Literacy

Last week you were given a long list of activities and you can continue with that if you want.  If not I am going to ask you to write a persuasive letter to the person of your choice.  It could be a parent, a teacher, a friend or even a club leader.  Things you should remember :-

  • An address and date go at the top right hand side of the letter.
  • The opening of the letter is a brief reason why you are writing the letter.
  • Flatter the reader.
  • Give at least 2 reasons that support what you’re asking for.
  • End the letter asking the reader to consider what you are asking them and it’s nice to thank them for taking the time to read your letter.

Please also try to do some reading.

Numeracy

I would like you to work out simple percentages of numbers.

50% = 1/2 so divide by 2.

25% = 1/4 so divide by 4

10% = 1/10 so divide by 10

20% = 1/5 so divide by 5

75% = 3/4 so divide by the denominator (4) and then multiply by the numerator (3)

E.g. 50% of 20 = 1/2 of 20 = 10

Start off with numbers up to 100 but go higher if you feel confident.

Definition – Article 28 – The right to education

Every child has the right to an education.

Primary education must be free and different forms of secondary education must be available to every child.

Discipline in schools must respect children’s dignity and their rights. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.

Introduction Thinking Question – Think of as many reasons as you can why education is important for children and young people

Possible Answers :

§ have skills to improve things and help people

§ form opinions and views about things

§ learn things, gain knowledge and pass exams

§ know how to stay safe and healthy

§ learn how to respect other people’s ideas and get on with other people

§ get a job they enjoy and earn money

§ make informed choices

§ learn about things that are important for the world

§ grow up to be responsible adults

Possible Activities to understand, demonstrate or show examples of the article

1. Create your ideal timetable for a week at school or home. Provide a quality education.

2. Create your ideal teacher. Draw an outline and write what makes a good teacher.

3. What makes a good learner?  Invent a cartoon character to represent a good learner.

4. Think about everything that happens in your school, what all the adults do to help you in class and out of class. Write a recipe for a Rights Respecting School.

5. Research & present a 1 page document on education in a different country.  School day, uniform, length of school day, subjects etc.

H & W

Think about kindness, patience and compassion.  You can either write a little  thank you note each day when someone in your household has shown these qualities.   That could make their day!  Or make a poster where you can draw or write about times you have shown any of these qualities or others have shown them to you.

STEM.

Your challenge this week is to make a prosthetic hand.  I particularly like the challenge at the end where you have to see what you can pick up with it.  There are suggested materials but you can just have a look at what you can find.  So again, you will have to choose materials, test, evaluate and adjust your design.  You will also have to measure so that each part of the mechanism is consistent.  I hope you enjoy this activity.  Have fun!
