On Thursday 10th March pupils from primary 6 and 7 went to the Moray Science Festival. We took part in four workshops.
Workshop 1: Are farts flammable?
We learned interesting facts about greenhouse gases and global warming.
Without green house gases the average temperature on Earth would be -17 degrees centigrade. (Brrr chilly!)
Global warming means Scotland gets colder but some other countries will get hotter.
Methane is flammable. In the lab, the gas in the taps is pressurised and a smell is added. this makes it less silent and deadly.
Carbon Dioxide is formed when fossil fuels are burned. Humans produce CO2 when we breathe out, burp and fart.
Trees use CO2 to grow. They pump out oxygen into the atmosphere.
We blew air from our lungs into test tubes containing calcium hydroxide. The CO2 in our breath reacted with it, making it cloudy and producing calcium carbonate.
We used borax and pva glue to make fart putty.
Video: The scientists set fire to some methane.
Workshop 2: Get Kinnected
We made paper aeroplanes and discussed what they need to fly. We decided they need wings and energy. Potential (stored) energy from our arms is transferred to the plane in the forum of kinetic energy.
Electricity is a form of kinetic energy. It is always moving. We produced electricity using a bike dynamo and saw a model of how a dam works.
Workshop 3: Paper Creations
Workshop 4: Puff Power
We used paper, sticky tape and bottle tops to make wind-powered cars. We blew the sail to make the cars move across the table.
