WOW! Another full on week in P1/2… They have worked so hard – keep it up everyone!

P1’s have been learning more new sounds, practising their letter formation and really tuning into listening to words to pick out beginning, middle and end sounds – well done! Blending is coming along nicely, with some children starting to read and make words themselves.

P2’s have learned about Veronica Verb this week and had a great time using their learning to create a verbs poster. As well as this they added to their previous Naomi Noun poster too! Great work guys. The boys and girls have been working hard to learn more tricky words (you’ve just got to know them!) and spent some time this week being tricky word detectives searching for those sight words in their reading books.

In number work P1’s have been learning to count on, completed some adding sums and have started to look at teen numbers. There was some fantastic learning going on today in the classroom – the boys and girls had to remind Mrs Thomson that we say fifteen, not five-ten! We have learned that every teen number must have a one at the start and that ‘teen’ means ten. Using the tens frames to visual these grouping with ten has certainly helped them off to a flying start. The P2’s have continued to deepen their understanding of place value and have been working on ordering 3 and 4-digit numbers this week. They have also been practising counting on and back in tens from any number! As a class we have been learning about 3D shapes; earlier this week we looked at different shape nets and made our very own 3D paper shapes. We also all enjoyed the team shape game where we had to race against an opponent to collect the 3D shape called out by Mrs Thomson. A super effort from everyone!

Yesterday we each created our own maps to help us find our way around the different settings from We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. The children gave some fantastic answers about what a map is used for and showed their understanding by sharing why someone might need to use a map. Their map creations, along with their own set of binoculars to look for that big bear, are coming along nicely. We will be taking them outside once they are finished to help us find our way to the bear’s cave.

The children from Ark Nursery joined us for P.E this week. What superb teachers we have in P1/2 – the children were patient and caring towards the boys and girls from Ark and took their time showing them how to pass and stop a football correctly. The class put their skills to the test today (Thursday) during P.E, demonstrating to Mrs Thomson, through a fun command game, how to: dribble, stop the ball, do knee bounces, head bounces, crouching down to defend the ball and showing off their own tricks! Everyone showed that they were really engaged and having fun.

Have a look at a small selection of what we’ve been up to.
