P1/2 have been learning about different kinds of forces. We have already looked at push and pull and today we were learning about floating and sinking.

The class worked cooperatively in small groups and had great discussions to predict whether their materials would float or sink… There was great excitement and lots of positive chatter going on!

The children were eager to explore the various materials and on the whole were able to correctly identify which would float and which would sink – what great scientists!

As a class we decided that the shape of the material was a contributing factor as to whether it would float or sink.

We have decided to try out playdough and tin foil again, but will try moulding them into a different shape to see if this changes whether each floats or sinks to the bottom of the container.

We are budding scientists in P1/2 🙂
