Stop Press!

Today P7H met the Press and Journal competition deadline by making up some newspaper front pages.  First we learnt about the features of a front page which included the mast piece, teaser, adverts and jumps.  We then went in to groups and collaborated to make up a story and news in brief.  We could choose to write about fictitious or factual events and when completed they varied from natural disasters, netball victories and escaping elephants!  This fun activity helped us to learn more about journalism and develop our skills for success.

Meeting a Deadline for Real!

Pupils in primary 6 and primary 7 have taken part in a competition being run by the Press and Journal.  A study of what makes for a good front page has been made by reading real editions of the P and J.  News – stories, headlines, advertisements, teasers, use of columns and layout have all been considered…

Impressive Running

Applegrove’s successful Cross Country season was rounded off in style. On Tuesday 28th March, 4 teams of 6 competed at the Moray Primary Schools Cross Country held at Lossie High.  Nearly 200 children, form 37 primary schools, ran in each of the four age group races.

This year, it was the boys that really shone. Both the P4/5 and P6/7 boys teams each won the trophy for the winning overall school.

The runners showed excellent sportsmanship and were a pleasure to be with.  The school values of challenge, motivation and kindness were all in evidence, not to mention resilience.  They are a credit to Applegrove and we are very proud of you all. Continue reading

Engineers Take Off

The TOPS Engineers group have been busy this term working on flight challenges.  However our first challenge was a team building task where we had 18 minutes to build a structure made from spaghetti that would hold a marshmallow on top.  All we had was a bit of string and tape to help us. This was really challenging, especially when our spaghetti kept snapping!

We then moved on to our flight activities.  First came the balloon jet engine task where we had to create a balloon  rocket.  This was thrust along a piece of string. We had a little competition to see whose balloon jet flew across the classroom first .

Next we made a hoop glider that floated through the air. It worked because the two sizes of the hoop helped to keep the straw balanced as it flew, producing lift.

We also followed instructions to make a paper helicopter.  The helicopter had to be held high and thrown upwards to launch it.  We tried slow motion filming to capture the movement through the air.

A Very Busy Tuck Shop

Lots of boys and girls have now qualified for a free tuck shop voucher.  This is because they have already eaten 10 healthy snacks at break time and filled in their healthy snack tracker.  It was great to see all the pots of strawberries, melon and cherries being eaten this morning!

Beetle Drive

Unfortunately due to absences and lack of numbers, the Beetle Drive on Friday night had be cancelled – there were not enough tables to make the event viable for the Mosset . Despite the hard work of the PTA and the non skiers to hold mini beetle drives in the school, it is a shame that there was such a low level of interest from families. If you have some good ideas for effective fundraising events or just social events  which encourage family participation we would be grateful to hear of them – you can comment by following us on Twitter at ApplegrovePS . The PTA are aways happy to hear of new ideas to fund raise so that we can improve outcomes for our pupils.
