Aims of the Project

Our Purpose

We are committed to providing buildings for educational use in rural areas of developing countries where many children, particularly girls, do not have access to an education.

During the trip all pupils will spend 10 days working on a building site with a team of local builders. The group will stay in basic accommodation and will take turns to cook and clean for the rest of the group.

On the middle weekend the group will take part in a game drive and have an overnight stay in a National Park.

All building materials are sourced locally and the builders receive payment for the duration of the build, not just the length of the school visit.

Benefits to our Project Members

The SCHS Africa Project is as much about providing opportunities for our own young people as it as about providing opportunities for those supported by our project in Africa.

The main purposes for pupils involved in the project are;

  • To visit, live and work in a new country and community.
  • To understand the difficulties of education in a developing country.
  • To contribute to the local economy.
  • To work on and leave behind a building which will allow African children to continue their education.
  • To raise awareness at home of the challenges facing people in developing countries.

Connected Global Citizens

The SCHS Africa Project is run in conjunction with Connected Global Citizens. Connected Global Citizens provide opportunities for school pupils from Scotland to visit a developing country and live and work in a local African community.
