RESPONSE TO COVID 19
SCHOOL SUBMISSIONS
Our thanks to those schools who have submitted their applications for 2020. In response to teacher requests, we have extended our deadline and are continuing to do our very best to accommodate schools at this very difficult and stressful time. The dates for submitting in 2021 will be posted on the Vision Schools Scotland website in August.
CPD
Vision Schools Scotland is seeking to identify the online platform that is shared by most or all of its participating schools. This will provide an alternative to the scheduled face-to-face CPD events and enable us to continue to support teachers in their professional learning. As Vision Schools are from a wide range of councils with different practices and policies, this is particularly challenging.
Vision Schools Scotland additionally deliver face-to-face and online presentations on the value of Holocaust Education and the value of Vision Schools Scotland, to local authorities. We have presented to teachers in North Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire and aim to present these to every local authority in Scotland.
ANNUAL AWARD EVENT
If social distancing remains in place at the time of the award in November 2020, this event will be rescheduled, held online, or held as planned with a smaller, permitted number of participants at the Scottish Parliament. Schools will be notified of any such change.

It’s been a busy few days for #VisionSchools #HMD2020
We attended the National Holocaust Memorial Event for Scotland at the Scottish Parliament on 27th January 2020. The theme of Stand Together explores how genocidal regimes throughout history have deliberately fractured societies by marginalising certain groups, and how these tactics can be challenged by individuals standing together with their neighbours, and speaking out against oppression.
Then yesterday (28.01.20) we were delighted to be represented at @ScotParl #TimeforReflection by @St_Rochs Level 2 Vision School, Head Teacher, Mr Stephen Stone who gave an outstanding address to the parliament. Thank you Stephen.
You can watch the full Time for Reflection here: https://www.scottishparliament.tv/meeting/time-for-reflection-january-28-2020

Stand Up to Racism Holocaust Memorial Day events took place in Glasgow on Tuesday evening with with Danielle Bett from the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities, Mohamed Asif from the Scottish Afghan Society and Henry Maitles, UWS professor and author of Understanding and Teaching the Holocaust, all speaking. The meeting started with a moving film made by Unite the trade union following the participation of some of its members on a trip to Krakow and Auschwitz, highlighting the need for more education.
The growth of antisemitism has gone hand in hand with the rise of the far-right, Islamophobia and anti-migrant rhetoric. We have seen attacks on Jews and synagogues terrorised in Germany, the US and in Britain too.
We need a movement to oppose all forms of racism.

Educational Trust’s sixth annual Exploring the Holocaust: UK Residential Course, in February 2020 in Leicester.
This course is free to attend. The Trust covers the cost of accommodation and food for the duration of the course. Bursaries are available to contribute to travel costs. Schools can also apply for funding towards cover costs for colleagues who need to take time out of the classroom in order to take part.
Dates
Friday 14 (starts at 7pm) – Tuesday 18 February 2020 (ends 5pm)
Programme overview
Our Exploring the Holocaust: UK Residential Course offers a fascinating programme of lectures and workshops designed to develop teachers’ subject knowledge and pedagogical approaches.
For teachers who have not completed any of our residential courses we recommend our Exploring the Holocaust: UK Residential Course as the first step in your Holocaust educational journey. It provides an ideal foundation for further study through our Teacher Study Visit programme and Annual Teacher Training Course at Yad Vashem. Over the last four years a large number of participants have progressed to attend one or both of these programmes following their attendance in Leicester.
The course is also suitable for those who have undertaken a Teacher Study Visit with us and are looking to deepen their knowledge before submitting an application to our most advanced course at Yad Vashem.
Educational sessions will be delivered by experts from the Holocaust Educational Trust and prominent academics engaging with the latest scholarship on the Holocaust.

This publication acknowledges the prejudice and persecution experienced by the Jewish community throughout history, not least from the Christian church.
Part One explores the distinctive relationship between Judaism and Christianity and traces its troubled history.
Part Two considers critical contemporary issues and reflects on how the Church should conduct itself appropriately in its mission and evangelism, teaching and preaching, ethical practices and attitudes towards Israel and Palestine.
