This year’s Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) comes at a time when the racist and fascist right are on the rise internationally and with Georgia Meloni and her fascist Brothers of Italy in government.

In Britain the scapegoating rhetoric being used by Home Secretary Suella Braverman has given confidence to the far right – and led Holocaust survivor Joan Salter to confront her with the words ‘’When I hear you using words against refugees like ‘swarms’ and an ‘invasion’, I am reminded of the language used to dehumanise and justify the murder of my family and millions of others’’.

While in Britain the consistent anti fascist campaigning and exposing of fascist groups and individuals has contributed to these forces being in a very weakened organisational state, we can never be complacent. Fascist groups are attempting to use upcoming elections to spread their hate, or have sought to whip up racism towards migrants and Muslims, or attacks on LGBT+ people to sow the seeds of division and scapegoat sections of our communities.

Telling the real story of the Nazi Holocaust to a new generation couldn’t be more crucial at a time when economic crisis is leading to the frightening growth of the far right’s ideas again.

The murder of 6 million Jewish people and millions more from Sinti-Roma & LGBT+ communities, socialists, trade unionists and other political opponents is an event that can never be forgotten.

We have to say #NeverAgain and organise to make sure that that slogan is a reality.

Join us on Tuesday evening. The event will be livestreamed on Stand Up To Racism’s Facebook page. AT 6PM on Tuesday (NOT BEFORE), CLICK HERE
