Although it is important to identify where we are now, it is not enough to stop there. We need to reflect upon how we can develop the skills where we are less confident and how we can transfer the skills in which we are confident and competent.

Activity 2

Complete the audit below, using the information from the table above.

Recognition Reflection Action
Skills already developed How will I use these How do I know (evidence)**
Teamwork  I will use teamwork when working with other students on my course during group projects and also with colleagues once I become a teacher to create tasks and activities etc. for the pupils.  I have used teamwork whilst being a member of a musical theatre company, I had to co-operate well with other members to make sure rehearsals went well and everything ran smoothly once the show was being performed in the theatre.
Leadership  Leadership will need to be used once I am in charge of a class to make sure the pupils all understand what they are supposed to be doing and are working well and to the best of their abilities.  I have shown Leadership through being appointed head of the Social Committee in my sixth year of high school. In this position I had to plan events, both for specific year groups and for the whole school. I also had to organise weekly meetings for the committee to discuss events, in these meetings I had to make sure everyone was heard and all ideas were considered equally and fairly.
Confidence  Confidence will be an important skill to have as a teacher as I will need to be able to feel confident in what I am teaching to my pupils so that I can help them as much as possible and also display to them that I am confident in what I am saying which will make them feel sure that what I am teaching is correct and will be valuable to them making them what to concentrate and learn.
Organised  It will be extremely important to be organised during university to make sure I get all my assignments submitted on time and turn up to lectures on time with the correct equipment. It will also be an important skill for a teacher as they will need to be organised enough to plan and prepare for lessons with enough time to collect materials needed etc. I believe being head of the social committee encouraged me to become more organised as I had to plan the events and make sure everything was prepared and ready by a certain date. I also had to be organised enough to be able to report back to my year head on how everything was coming along and provide evidence of this on a weekly basis.

Reliable

Being reliable is an extremely important skill to have in any job. It will be very important in university if I am working in a group for a project as the other members of the group will be relying on me to play my part and get things done on time so that the project can be completed and submitted on time, they will also be relying on me to put in a full effort and complete the project to the best of my ability. As a teacher you need to be reliable as other members of staff may be relying on you to complete certain tasks etc. also the pupils rely on you to have lessons planned and activities for them to complete so that they can proceed in their learning without having to hang about and wait for the teacher to be prepared.  I feel that becoming a Rainbow Leader has made me a more reliable person as I knew that the other leaders were relying on me to arrive to meetings on time otherwise meetings couldn’t go ahead as it is a legal requirement to have a certain number of leaders for the number of Rainbows we had in our group. I was also being relied on to prepare the materials needed for the activities I was holding in enough time to practice and plan what I was going to do before I taught the Rainbows otherwise meetings would not be able to run smoothly or successfully and this would have held up other leaders activities and the full meeting could not have been completed in the time that the rainbows were there for.
Responsible  As a teacher you need to be a very responsible person as you are in charge of people’s young children. You are responsible for their safety and education from a very young age.  I believe I have shown that I am a responsible person both through being a Rainbow Leader and through my work experience in a P1 Class. Both these activities involved me being in charge of a group of young children, ensuring that they are all safe, happy and are working and co-operating well. These experiences have taught me what is expected of me and made me more aware of how I should act when I have a class of my own to be seen as a responsible individual and a responsible teacher who is capable of looking after a class by themselves.

** This section should be completed as you identify when/where/how you have used/developed these skills.
