I had my first attempt at the NOMA and I was surprised when I got 64%. I always enjoyed the challenge of maths in school but I had to work very very hard to achieve the grades I got. The last time I done a maths exam was almost six years ago so it did bring back a few horrible flashback of standard grade maths. I did higher maths in school but didn’t do very well in the prelim so took it again the next year then decided I didn’t actually need higher maths so dropped it in sixth year so never received any qualification for my two years work. the NOMA was useful because it allowed me to see what I was confident with and what I would need to have a it more practice on.
I think overall I actually enjoyed doing the NOMA, I enjoyed engaging bits of my brain I hadn’t used in a while. I really want to do it a few more times before placement and build my score up so that its closer to an acceptable 85%. I might even look into taking out some primary maths textbooks and doing a few exercises just so I can refresh my brain on what primary maths actually looks like. I think the NOMA gave me more confidence about my own maths ability and in turn made me more confident to teach it.
