The game was developed by Glitchers, a Scottish studio, and Dr Brad Duthie and Professor Nils Bunnefeld of the University of Stirling.
Using Restore to teach geography at second level (CfE)
Education Scotland (ES) identified a gap in primary school geography education and saw the potential of this game to be used here. ES recruited two geography teachers to develop resources that could be used at second level of Curriculum for Excellence. They developed a series of PowerPoints that could be used by teachers to scaffold the learning that takes place during and after playing the game.
This work was carried out independent of the developers but has been shared with them. Brad and Nils are keen to hear how you use the game with your classes and you can contact them directly or complete this form and ES will share your feedback.
Using the resources
The concept behind these lessons is that teachers might use the PowerPoint to scaffold the ideas present in the game. Starting with a knowledge check of terms they will encounter, such as pollution and deforestation. The children should then play the game a few times to see how different actions produce different outcomes.
As they play, they will face challenges, such as population levels and food production, zoonotic disease and environmental damage or restoration. The slides will support teachers to explore these issues with the children, backed by teaching notes and next steps developed by experienced geography teachers.
