Positive Relationships, Positive Behaviour

We are committed to creating a positive ethos within all of our educational establishments and wider communities, where an emphasis is placed on a relationship based approach.

Focusing on positive relationships in educational establishments is central to developing safe, inclusive and nurturing environments which support all children and young people to learn, develop in a healthy way and thrive.

This commitment to promoting positive relationships extends to all children and young people, their parents and carers and staff and is underpinned by values of fairness and equality.

To ensure that we are getting it right for all children and young people, different support will be given to children and young people to nurture these positive relationships depending on individual need.

Universal:

  • Whole school nurturing approaches.
  • A clear focus placed on early intervention and prevention.
  • A balance between high expectation, structure and emotional warmth.
  • Careful consideration of the protected characteristics.

Targeted and individual approaches:

  • For a small number of young people, a staged approach to intervention is key.
  • De-escalation approaches in supporting distressed behaviour where it occurs.

Our guidance Promoting Positive Relationships and Positive-Behaviour, sets out research, analysis and strategies to develop a relationship based approach and gives explicit guidance around the use of safe spaces, physical interventions, physical restraint and seclusion.
