At Risk Behaviours and Society

On the 13th of February within the Society and Lifestyles lecture we learned more about risk behaviours within society. It is important within education that children are educated on the common risk behaviours which can lead to premature death, injuries or danger so that they can be as safe as possible within society. As a teacher, children look up to them as role models and it is a teacher’s duty to care for children and show empathy which would result in a better society overall.

Habits that are often seen in childhood, carry on into adulthood which results in certain diseases such as dietary habits, cigarette smoking, alcohol intake and inactivity. This is why it’s important for this to be integrated into children’s education before these bad risk behaviours could become habits into adulthood. Within schools today, there is a massive need for change from this trend of bad lifestyles. We need to inspire, motivate and challenge the nation to achieve the vision of health improvements by society and individuals. Individuals have to eat healthy and include daily activity into their lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

This is where it’s essential that children are aware of these dangers as risky behaviours at that age are contributing to high mortality rates and adult morbidity. Children also have to be educated as this is when they develop the attitudes that they take with them into adulthood which creates all the problems. So if children are educated younger, it could limit the amount of deaths and bad health in adulthood.

The main factors that escort our health within society are culture, religion, friends, media, medical communities, education, environment and heredity. Individuals are also influenced by peers, family, society, the community and their school. There are also some societal institutions, for example – parents and families, health care providers, government agencies etc.

There are particular visions that the Scottish Government are striving to achieve by 2020 to ensure a healthier society of people and less death rates. These main visions include healthier eating, more activity in daily life, increased life expectancy, appropriate working, housing and living conditions, less smoking and less binge drinking. In order for these things to all be achieved, education Is a fundamental approach towards these outcomes. The Scottish Government’s 2020 vision is that by 2020 – “everyone is able to live longer healthier lives at home…and that we will have a better healthcare system where we have integrated health and social care…”
